Job Description

ImmunityBio, Inc. is a late-stage immunotherapy company developing a broad pipeline of next-generation therapies that drive immunogenic mechanisms for defeating cancer and infectious disease. The company's immunotherapy platform is designed to activate both the innate (natural killer cell and macrophage) and adaptive (T cell) immune systems to create long-term "immunological memory." The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted for review ImmunityBio's resubmission of its Biologics License Application (BLA) for N-803, a first-in-class IL-15 superagonist, plus Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) for the treatment of BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer carcinoma in situ (CIS) with or without Ta or T1 disease, and has set a user fee goal date (PDUFA date) of April 23, 2024.

Position Summary

The Microfluidics Engineer III serves as a key member of the device engineering team to develop a microfluidic-based platform and workflow for mammalian cell processing. This position will act as lead on the microfluidics platform; design and fabricate microfluidic devices; and perform experiments to evaluate and iterate the device design systematically. The role will have significant freedom on the platform design, with accountability to, and support from, the engineering team developing other aspects of: instruments, consumables, and reagents for the system. The role will also work closely with scientists in the biologics R&D team to evaluate and optimize the device platform for the intended applications in manufacturing cellular therapeutics.

Essential Functions

  • Design and manufacture plastic/polymer microfluidic devices for testing and use design-for-manufacturing best practices to transition to production, assembly, and packaging.
  • Design and conduct experiments to evaluate device performance and iterate device design through literature studies, fundamental multiphysics modeling, and empirical testing.
  • Assist in defining system specifications and requirements and work with the rest of the engineering team to implement the system
  • Perform other routine job duties as needed.

Education & Experience

  • Masters of Science degree with 2-5 years of experience; or Ph.D. in related engineering or applied scientific fields such as bioengineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering.
  • Experience in biomedical microfluidic system prototyping and development
  • MEMS/BioMEMS cleanroom microfabrication experience required
  • PDMS-based microfluidic device prototyping experience required
  • 2D/3D CAD modeling, multiphysics simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL) preferred

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the mechanics and fluid dynamics governing microfluidic systems required
  • Basic knowledge of biology and cell culture / cell handling experience preferred
  • Due to the independent nature of the position, it is a vital to have the ability to clearly document and communicate successes and struggles through regular verbal discussions, writing, and group presentations
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are a necessity

Working Environment / Physical Environment

  • This role will work predominately on-site at Culver City and occasionally at UCLA's NanoLab
  • Hybrid remote work is acceptable on an ad-hoc basis after discussion with the manager
  • The working environment is within an approximately 2,000 square foot lab space equipped with biosafety cabinets for mammalian cell culture and equipment to complete the tasks described above.
  • Occasionally: Transporting small equipment required

This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus and equity award. The annual base pay range for this position is below. The specific rate will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications, prior experience as well as geographic location.

$115,000 (entry-level qualifications) to $140,000 (highly experienced)
