In this role, you will be responsible for performing work such as installation, inspection, calibration and repair of system protection devices, transducers and equipment under the guidance and supervision of higher-level technicians. The ideal candidate will have:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum of six (6) months related experience from any combination of education, training and/or previous employment in:
    Electronics AND/OR, Power systems AND/OR, Computer Sciences (accompanied by some computer and technical communications protocol)
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • CDL (preferred not required)

Salary Range: Starting at $25.64 per hour (Estimated $53,347.00 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $38.94 per hour (Estimated $81,007.00 annually)

Job Purpose:

Learn to perform the work associated with and including, but not limited to, the installation, testing, inspection, calibration, and repair of all system protection devices, transducers, and equipment (microprocessor based and electronic relays, circuits, protective controls, switchboards, and other substation equipment) on OUC's electric transmission and distribution systems. The Relay Technician III is a beginner technician position focused on gaining knowledge and skills in progression, primarily performing work under the guidance and supervision of higher-level technicians.

Primary Functions:

  • Work with relay technicians I and II to assist and learn relay, meter, and transducer testing; start learning SCADA functions
  • Assist with and learn basics of relay installation
  • Work with substation employees to access and maintain transformer remote sensing devices
  • Assist with and learn high-quality wiring in accordance with OUC standards
  • Work with communications tech employees to assist on fiber installation jobs
  • Work on simple overcurrent relays with little or no assistance
  • Assist with and learn printing of relay test reports with all the proper information. Learn how to file all reports
  • Assist with and learn reading wiring diagrams and schematics; perform beginner to intermediate mark-up changes
  • Assist with and learn troubleshooting various problems we encounter on a daily basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Technical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of all, but not limited to the following:
    • Principles of electricity;
  • Familiarity with all, but not limited to the following:
    • Electronic Circuitry (AC/DC elementary schemes);
    • Basic electrical testing/measuring equipment (e.g. multimeter);
    • Related industry, organizational and departmental regulatory guidelines, best practices, and procedures;
  • Some Familiarity with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories relays (preferred)
  • Strong technical, analytical, and logical problem solving/troubleshooting skills;
  • Ability to:
    • Understand basic mechanical techniques and principles;
    • Verbally communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of employees;
    • Learn and read and interpret plans, specifications, and manuals;
    • Make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages;
    • Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.).

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of six (6) months related experience from any combination of education, training and/or previous employment in:
    • Electronics AND/OR
    • Power systems AND/OR
    • Computer sciences (accompanied by some computer and technical communications protocol)

Working Conditions:

This job involves very frequent risk of electrical shock. This job involves occasional exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and insects.

Physical Requirements:

This job includes frequent speaking/ hearing, writing/ typing, and detailed inspection. This job requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending. There may be occasional climbing, kneeling, reaching over head, and lifting up to forty (40) lbs. Also, this job includes frequent driving of a company vehicle.
