Job Description

The Vice President of Engineering and Design will plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee activities of the Engineering and Design organization for the shipyard, ensuring the development and implementation of efficient operations and cost-effective systems to meet current and future needs of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and the U.S. Navy. Reporting to the President, work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to transform shipyard systems and processes to meet Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and People objectives.

    Lead, establish and implements the strategic direction for Engineering and Design initiatives.
  • Lead continuous improvement and transformational projects to improve engineering performance, quality and systems.
  • Use lean methodologies to reduce engineering flow cycle and man-hours.
  • Responsible for new surface combatants and the modernization and integrated logistical support of DDG destroyers in the fleet.
  • Responsible for engineering and technical support of the manufacture and testing of new construction ships in the shipyard.
  • Responsible for the technical oversight of ship equipment suppliers.
  • Responsible for the staffing and development of the organization.
  • Establish and execute to budgets and schedules in support of the overall BIW business plan.
  • Collaborates with the company's executive leadership to develop and meet organizational goals while supplying expertise and guidance on projects, operations, and systems.
  • Establish and maintain strong affiliation with other department Vice Presidents and affiliates with General Dynamics Corporate Headquarters and other Business Units.
  • Develop a strategic planning approach to leverage our resources and capabilities capture new business opportunities.
  • Actively lead multi-functional teams in problem solving efforts to reduce variation, improve customer satisfaction, and improve financial return.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of a large group of salaried and represented employees.
Required/Preferred Education/Training
  • BS degree in Engineering or other related field required, MBA or advanced technical degree preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance required.
Required/Preferred Experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of leadership experience, including proven ability to manage a large number of employees in engineering / design in shipyards and/or Naval Architecture and/or Engineering firms required.
  • Working knowledge of the various logistics support activities performed on U.S. Navy ships, naval architecture design and engineering discipline preferred.
  • Must have a strong business sense and understanding of financial metrics and goals as related to business objectives.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to lead a team comprised of multiple disciplines.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to foster a constructive and motivating work environment based on teaming.
  • Positive relationship and reputation with U.S. Navy customer.
  • Working knowledge of government contracting practices.
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
  • Knowledge of PLM with Design to Build experience.
  • Prefer experience in Manufacturing or Industrial engineering working closely with Operations.
