GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The School Counselor implements a comprehensive school counseling program to ensure equitable access to a rigorous education for all students. As a professional educator with a mental health perspective, the counselor understands and responds to the needs of a diverse student population. The school counselor identifies the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K-12 school counseling program, based on data-driven decision making. The school counselor provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students' social emotional development, academic achievement and career preparation.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:
  • TSPC Counselor license or ability to acquire TSPC licensure in Counseling.
  • Three years' experience, preferred, working in a counseling program or educational setting requiring similar skills and/or providing services to students in a school or community setting, OR three years' experience working in an agency setting providing counseling or related services to youth.
  • Ability to effectively manage and supervise students
  • Ability to make decisions independently and to use initiative and judgment in accomplishing tasks following overall policies and objectives
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets and word processing software.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-045). Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Essential duties of this position include the following
  • Provide guidance to students in grades K-12
  • Coordinate student forecasting and master-schedule.
  • Counsel groups or individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Coordinates with teachers, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing requested information, gaining needed information and/or making recommendations.
  • Counsel students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
  • Counsel small groups and individual students experiencing emotional & behavioral challenges in school; make appropriate referrals to community resources as needed in severe cases.
  • Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of the students.
  • Evaluate and revise the district counseling program.
  • Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers.
  • Consult with teachers to provide counseling learning activities into the regular education curricula.
  • Responds to crisis situations when appropriate.
  • Coordinate the CIS program.
  • Provides individual, small group and/or classroom instruction/counseling/guidance which promotes safe, healthy and positive choices.
  • Assists teachers and administration in establishing school programs and activities, which promote safe, healthy and positive choices for behavior including service learning and leadership opportunities.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. observations, progress, contacts with parents, teachers, outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information
  • Presents information on various topics (e.g. behavior management, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or advice.
  • Assist school staff and administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct, reinforce individual schools' plans for positive behavior support, and utilize effective, proactive behavior management skills in all school settings.
  • Provide appropriate instruction of learning opportunities for students, evening parent meetings and other parent information meetings as needed.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year to be according to the current negotiated contract.

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Board policy.

  • Annually pass the district's required online training by the district's assigned due date

  • Possible exposure to bodily harm due to student behaviors.
