Position Announcement

Housed within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, the Director of Innovation Labs/Computer and Information Data Research Scientist will be engaged in technology innovation, data collection and research to understand the core principles of computer and information science, acting as theorist, designer, inventory, and Director as applied to visitor use data in National and Utah State Parks. This position supervises a team of web app designers/developers to create solutions to challenges in both computer hardware and software domains. Working in multidisciplinary teams, this position will share findings and collaborate with professionals in other fields to apply research in practical applications. Responsibilities

National Parks Visitor Use Data Project (15% of time)

  • Innovate solution implementation within National Parks like Zion and Yellowstone. This involves synchronizing innovative ideas, environmental considerations, and user-centric solutions to ensure the balanced amalgamation of technology and natural preservation.
  • Lead diverse teams in bridging the gaps between different disciplines and ensuring a holistic approach to problem-solving and solution implementation.
  • Continuously assess the project's impact, implementing adaptive strategies to refine solutions based on real-time feedback and evolving needs.
  • Meticulous monitoring of project milestones and real-world implications of the implemented solutions to ensure the sustained progress and adaptability of the initiatives.
  • Implement hardware sensors at key entrance and exit points, as well as high-traffic areas within the national parks, to collect data on visitor numbers and movement patterns. Use this data to inform visitor use management.
Utah State Parks Project (70% of time)
  • Orchestrate a seamless integration of advanced technological solutions within the Utah State Parks, aligning project goals with the overarching vision of modernization and efficiency. Ensures meticulous planning, monitoring, and execution of project timelines, scopes, and deliverables to manage stakeholder expectations and foster a harmonious transition towards innovative recreational services.
  • Champion collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, including cross-functional teams, department heads, and external partners.
  • With a focus on optimal utilization and proactive mitigation, allocate resources and monitor risk factors. Requires a dynamic approach to managing both human and technological resources, ensuring equilibrium between project demands and available assets.
Project Management (15% of time)
  • Leverage academic insights and cutting-edge methodologies to spearhead the transformation of theoretical concepts into practical, innovative strategies. These strategies will be tailored to meet the distinctive needs of Utah state agencies and programs.
  • Serve as a conduit between diverse University departments and state agencies.
  • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of innovation projects, insuring planning, execution, and evaluation at every phase. Includes managing timelines, resources, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required. An equivalent combination of college coursework and industry experience will also be considered.
  • At least five (5) years of related experience in managing complex research or implementation projects required, with preference of work experience in interdisciplinary settings.
  • A strong background in research methodologies, preferably with published papers in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++, as well as experience with hardware design and sensor technologies.
  • Advanced skills in data analytics, including the use of software like R, MATLAB, or specialized data visualization tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with the unique challenges and requirements of deploying hardware in a national park or other outdoor settings, including considerations with environmental impact and wildlife.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, train, lead, and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, as well as collaborate with professionals from other fields such as environmental science, biology, and/or park management.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles, especially as they relate to data collection and transmission in outdoor, remote settings.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and methodologies, and to apply them in novel settings such as a national or state park.
Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time professional staff (overtime-exempt) position. Annual salary of $90,000, with a desired start date of June/July 2024.
