Title: Senior SUD Medicaid Analyst

$57,553 - $84,115 / Posted Thru: 5-24-24

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose: The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Dashboard Analysts will provide effective visualizations and dashboards to those working in the SUD space to aid in decision-making. This position would leverage their Power BI skills to conduct complex assignments related to dashboard design, development, and maintenance with support from the Opioids and Emerging Drugs (OED) Unit and monitor dashboards for trends and insights to be reported to leadership. This position will be housed in the MDHHS Opioids and Emerging Drugs (OED) Unit, within the Division of Environmental Health under the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health in Lansing.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards for SUD-related data.
  • Collaborate with the Opioids and Emerging Drugs (OED) Unit and other staff, management, and leadership to ensure dashboards meet specific needs and user requirements and reflect best available data.
  • Develop and perform data quality checks to ensure the validity and cleanliness of datasets prior to their use in analysis and reporting. Identify gaps or data quality issues.
  • Model data by definite tables, define relationship cardinality and cross-filter direction, and leverage DAX to build complex measures.
  • Apply data shape transformation to table structures and configure data loading.
  • Investigate and evaluate potential for automation of data source intake, processing, and loading into dashboards.
  • Provide technical and administrative assistance to areas for updating and maintaining existing dashboards.
  • Design and conduct analyses to identify and evaluate trends, patterns, and correlations in the data.
  • Develop clear and concise visualizations that effectively communicate complex data about SUD trends, demographics, and other relevant factors.
  • Monitor SUD-related data dashboards, reports, or data sources for emerging trends, insights, and potential areas of concern and for potential for combination or additions among dashboards and data tools.
  • Collaborate with the OED Unit and other relevant program areas and teams to ensure data accuracy and consistency across data reporting approaches.
  • Independently manages and completes complex projects.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Conduct other duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Master's degree or PhD preferred.

Experience: Three years of professional experience, including one year of experience equivalent to the experienced (P11) level in state service. A minimum of 1 year of experience in Power BI dashboard development and management, especially with large datasets, highly preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

  • Power BI dashboard development and maintenance experience, analytic and data presentation skills, and ability to manage detailed tasks.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Remote work environment, subject to changed based on State of Michigan requirements.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This role directly supports the MDHHS's drug overdose surveillance activities by developing and maintaining informative Power BI dashboards. This involves working with the State Epidemiology Outcomes Workgroup, the Opioid Policy Team, and the Bureau of Infectious Disease. The purpose is to develop a coordinated system that provides accurate, timely, and useful data on drug overdose to key stakeholders, policymakers, MDHHS, researchers, local programs, and other interested parties. Drug overdose data will be provided in a way that helps partners inform state- and community-level programming and interventions, and evaluate the impact of state, local and organizational policy changes on drug overdoses.
