Overview

Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine Research Scientist

**This is an onsite position in Anesthesiology**

This Research Scientist is responsible for performing statistical analysis for various clinical and basic researchers, the preparation of statistical reports including tables and figures, as well as writing Methods/Material and Results sections of manuscripts and grants.

Additionally, will work under the mentorship of an established principal investigator or the Vice-Chair/Director of Research to help prepare technical materials such as abstracts, annual reports, scientific papers, and poster presentations. Publishes scientific articles in appropriate refereed journals. Works toward a long-term goal of becoming independent in his/her research effort, and eventually obtaining external research funding.

Responsibilities
    Completes and maintains the necessary IRB certification for participation in research.
  • Runs various statistical and statistical software packages, including in-house programs, to analyze data.
  • Executes simulation-based studies to evaluate performance of alternative and novel data analytic methods.
  • Prepares summary statistics on data preparatory to data analyses.
  • Prepares results of analyses for presentation and publication.
  • Researches available software options for specific projects.
  • With minimal guidance from a faculty mentor, designs experiments and develops research protocols or analyses required to conduct productive research in a specific scientific area. After the study has been designed, performs the research work in accordance with the protocol.
  • Records and analyzes data generated by the research study, and helps to plan future research endeavors.
  • Prepares scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work. Publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals. Presents findings at local (particularly RI research meetings) and national research forums.
  • Advises and consults with members of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine regarding study design, sample sizes, and power analysis.
  • If appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing research efforts either at the RI or at The Ohio State University.
  • Is facile with and works with established National Databases such as NSQIP or PHIS to access data for scientific publications.
  • Works toward research independence. Prepares to submit proposals to obtain funding from external granting agencies.
  • Supports for the training of fellows and graduate students involved in statistical research in the department.
  • Appropriate teaching and professional service (e.g. peer review) activities.
  • Performs additional duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Science or related field.
  • Excellent knowledge of General Linear Mixed Models (GLMM), factor analysis, structural equation modeling, cluster analysis, survival analysis, propensity score matching and data management techniques.
  • Ability to work with minimal instructions or independently.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and self-management skills.
  • Desire to pursue a career in research, and knowledge of the research process.
  • Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research.
  • Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills.

Reports to: Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine as well as the Vice-Chair/Director of Research. Administratively reports to the Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine Service Line Administrator.
