We are seeking a Distinguished R & D Staff member with extensive background in the area of materials processing and advanced manufacturing of metallic materials. In this position, the applicant will have responsibility for building a robust team and research program focused on the manufacturing of materials feedstocks for processing through advanced manufacturing techniques such as laser and electron beam powder bed manufacturing. The applicant will be expected to interact with a diverse group of researchers across ORNL to solve challenging, interdisciplinary technical problems related to advanced manufacturing and the manufacturing of materials feedstocks, as well as effectively communicate with outside entities, including universities, industrial partners, and government funding sources. An extensive background in the principles of materials science as related to materials processing is required. Experience in additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing processes, and computational materials science is also desired along with strong written and oral communication skills demonstrated through previous accomplishments. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group located at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) in the Manufacturing Sciences Division (MSD), Energy Sciences and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work within a committed team of scientists to process and characterize and identify disruptive avenues for the manufacture of powder feedstocks
  • Optimize process conditions to produce high performance material and relate the material performance to microstructure using advanced characterization techniques
  • Work with team members to develop new research directions, opportunities, and demonstration projects
  • Be a demonstrated leader in the research community through involvement in professional societies
  • Interact with industrial partners, other research organizations, and universities related to advanced manufacturing technologies, materials development, and materials manufacturing
  • Responsible for presenting, reporting, and publishing scientific research results in appropriate community forums.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • Develop and build a sustainable research program focused on materials manufacturing

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in materials science, mechanical engineering or related field with a minimum of 12 years relevant experience or a M.S. in materials science or related field with a minimum of 16 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write winning proposals to government agencies in the area of materials and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead projects as a principal investigator.
  • Demonstrated ability to make significant technical contributions to projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to present scientific results to sponsors and technical communities, we well as at professional society conferences and workshops.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated and safety conscious

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 25 or more years of relevant experience in the science of materials processing
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing technologies
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, and society service
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task, and adapt to ever-changing needs with the proven ability to function well and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative, team environment
  • Experience working in and leading diverse and dynamic teams
