JOB SUMMARY

The Lab Director is responsible for the direct operations of accredited, independent commercial laboratory facilities that offer a wide range of analytical testing, consultative, and research support services. This management includes areas of technical expertise, production performance and staff oversight and development, business performance and administrative activities. Through strong, positive leadership, the Managing Director ensures the profitability of laboratory facilities through effective financial, human capital, and resource management and customer care.


Essential Functions:

  • Leads, plans, organizes and supports the activities and resources related to processing samples, consulting clients or conducting research, in a manner that is cost effective while maintaining the highest level of quality
  • Establishes, enforces and monitors criteria for operations, production, purchasing, record keeping, reporting, laboratory safety, waste handling and disposal, and client management
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and understanding of industry trends, conditions, regulatory requirements, and competitors' pricing, and other factors that may influence customers to present them with honest and accurate value propositions that favor utilizing our services
  • Supports the Quality and Human Resource functions, ensuring all policies and procedures are applied throughout the division
  • Maintains staff by selecting, orienting, training, and motivating employees; maintaining a safe, secure, and legally compliant work environment; developing personal growth opportunities
  • Accomplishes staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising job results, and giving continual feedback; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards
  • Work closely with members of the sales team and laboratory technical staff to understand current service offerings and to identify areas to develop additional capabilities
  • Work collaboratively with technical staff teams to directly address the needs of clients
  • Establish a positive rapport with clients and work closely with them to understand their needs
  • Work collaboratively with internal Customer Relationship Teams to identify and address areas for improvement, ensuring the Company is doing its absolute best to meet the needs our clients
  • Leverage knowledge of the company, clients, and industry trends and changes to proactively anticipate and address the needs of clients
  • Promotes a cohesive, collaborative team approach to daily operations
  • Ensures the facility, instrumentation and equipment are well maintained and are in good working order
  • Ensure that client and employee requests and concerns are addressed in an appropriate and timely manner

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in science as it relates to the industry is required
  • A minimum of 5 years of prior commercial laboratory experience
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and abilities
  • Comfort leading meetings and negotiations
  • Ability to understand and align the needs of others with company services and present compelling value propositions
  • Understanding of regulatory and testing requirements for the industry
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and train team members
  • Ability to use positive motivation techniques to ensure team success

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be in a general office environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • This job requires travel up to 50%
