Job Description

Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. * Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED. Maintenance experience with electrical systems in a large commercial or institutional setting.

Brief Description of Duties: The Trades Specialist (Electrician) will be responsible for performing maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, installation and repair of campus electrical systems. Must consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of University assets and employees. Physically able to work from ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts and boom trucks. Ability to work outside in all different types of weather conditions. Ability to work overtime and respond to campus electrical outages during the off hours. This position also supports the HVAC Department. Duties to include the following:

  • Inspect electrical systems and equipment to identify hazards, defects, and the need for repair, and to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code. Plans layout and install and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. This position will also support the HVAC Department will all electrical needs.
  • Test, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, including central heating plant controls' building heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment; and for a wide variety of other equipment and systems. Must consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of the University assets and employees. Detect hazards and needs for adjustments or replacements.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair various types of indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, 120 volt to 277 volt.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures using a test device such as a multimeter. Installs controls and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels.
  • Understanding and proficient in safe work practices, including LOTO (lockout / Tagout), fall protection, and personal protection equipment.
  • Plan, layout and Install conduit, junction boxes and all other electrical hardware necessary for conductor distribution.
  • Install and maintain motors, circuit breakers, and other electrical equipment.
  • Using the knowledge of the National Electrical Code and NFPA-70E, read and review drawings, blueprints, and campus standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
