Minimum Experience/Education
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require Certification or eligibility for Certification.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
High school graduate and two years of experience in planting, cultivation and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses; or equivalent combination and experience. Some horticulture education would be beneficial. One year demonstrated supervisory experience. Knowledge of tools, materials and methods used in grounds maintenance work. Mechanical aptitude to make adjustments and minor repairs to grounds equipment. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others. Ability to perform work involving physical strain for an extended period of time. Safety awareness. Good communication skills.
Required License or Certification
Commercial Driver's License required (or must receive within 6 months of employment; else disciplinary action).
Pesticide License (MUST receive within 6 months of employment else disciplinary action)
Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
Grounds Labor Crew Leader works with and supervises/monitors a 5-15 man crew (including temporary labor) in the completion of skilled and unskilled tasks and concurrent projects relative to the general upkeep of the University Grounds, sanitation, recycling, moving/hauling, landscaping, and maintenance of athletic arena, setting up and take down of equipment and preparations for special events such as track meets, softball, football, baseball and other special events. Monitors manual tasks such as mow grass, sow grass/fertilizer, chemical applications, police grounds, weed shrub beds, move and haul furniture and other materials/equipment. Trains and applies high maintenance techniques/standards equivalent to the certified standards for lawn care. Builds relationships with customers and co-workers. Work affects the appearance of the entire University; work is subject to inspection to assure grounds sanitation and satisfactory landscaping.

Serves as backup driver for the sanitation truck and required to have valid NC commercial driver's license (CDL). Also required to submit pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.

Understands oral and written instructions; directs crew in completing various grounds maintenance activities; knows and encourages use of work safety techniques in compliance with OSHA guidelines. Utilizes a variety of grounds equipment and lawn mowers; mix and apply chemicals and fertilizers in a safe manner. Pesticide license required. Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Acts as Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Grounds Department provides maintenance and upkeep for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Other services include sanitation (trash collection and removal), grounds maintenance and upkeep, landscaping, moving/hauling, and setting up for special events.
Work Hours Required to work an 8-hour day between 6am-6pm M-F. Works 1-2 weekends each month for 3 hrs on Saturdays and 2 hrs on Sundays. Required overtime for special events. Essential employee required to respond to campus emergencies (i.e., snow/ice storms)

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
Works along with crew members engaged in performing a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled manual tasks that include but are not limited to:

Mowing, edging, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, trimming, aeration and seeding.

Mixing and spraying of chemicals.

Planting and watering trees, shrubs, hedges, flowers; installing plant beds.

Cleaning concrete, curbs, drains.

Moving and hauling furniture, equipment and other materials.

Snow/ice removal (inclement weather clean-up).

Assists with trash collection including walking, policing and picking up debris and emptying trash cans.
Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance
Duties
Ensures adherence to safety standards via safe performance of work activities and safe operation of equipment and vehicles.

Operates sanitation truck safely in the daily collection and removal of trash, recyclables and non-recyclables from campus.

Attends safety training sessions and use of safety items (i.e., vests, shoes, gargles).

Duties
Monitors crew members performing a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled manual tasks.

Supervises mixing and application of chemicals.

Oversees setup and take down for special events and activities.

Keeps record of inventory, equipment and materials issued.

Develops plans for grounds maintenance and setting up for special events and activities in conjunction with the Grounds Supervisor and Grounds Superintendent Instructs crew in the use of various grounds hand and power tools/equipment.

Drives sanitation truck and crew vehicle; inspects work for compliance with plans and instructions.

Builds positive relationship with customers, communicates and resolves issues related to event set up and moving and hauling.
