INVISTA is seeking an experienced Public Affairs Manager to join our Public Sector team and help shape our company's reputation as a trusted community partner and industry leader. As the Public Affairs Manager, you will drive strategic public affairs initiatives that foster community relations and employee engagement at U.S. sites while being a part of a dynamic global team. The position is based in Houston, Texas with some travel required to other U.S. sites.


The successful candidate will have excellent writing skills, crisis communications skills, an ability to manage and execute multiple projects in a timely manner, strong relationship building skills and a passion for principled entrepreneurship.


What You Will Do

  • Community Relations: Be the face of our company in the community. Build new and maintain strategic positive relationships with key community members, philanthropies, local elected officials, and media. Participate in meetings with external audiences, including Community Advisory Panels (CAP), civic clubs, schools, and business groups. Measure progress via community feedback, CAP engagement, perception surveys, etc.
  • Media Relations: Serve as a company spokesperson and respond swiftly and effectively to inquiries. Build strong relationships with reporters and editors covering our communities. Compile and analyze complex information to create compelling stories to pitch to the media that drive our narrative in the public sphere and highlight our values and achievements. Facilitate media interviews, providing background information and explanations to ensure accurate coverage. Track company media mentions, keep abreast of industry news and timely share applicable news with leadership.
  • Incident Response/Crisis Communications: Anticipate and address potential issues that could impact operations at the sites. Serve as a key member of the crisis management team, following established protocols and ensuring swift and effective responses to operations leaders, the community, government, and media. Facilitate alignment of strategies between public affairs and government affairs teams and business/site leadership. Keep incident response plans up to date and pursue continued education on crisis communications best practices.
  • Strategic Communications Advisor: Provide strategic public affairs guidance to leadership teams across the U.S. sites that builds community relations, leverages our achievements, drives employee engagement, and supports business objectives.
  • Community Engagement: Develop and implement engaging programs and employee volunteer opportunities aligned with our focus areas of entrepreneurship, education, environment, and enrichment and ensure they are executed and leveraged for maximum benefit. Add long-term value to our communities and measure progress via media mentions, community feedback, etc. Seek opportunities for recognition the sites qualify for and assist with award application drafting and submittal. Attend company-sponsored community events and strengthen our knowledge networks. Develop social media strategies and posts and manage social media platforms on behalf of the company.
  • Administration: Manage and track budgets and expenses by site, submit Purchase Orders in Fluxx and coordinate with accounting contacts.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, communications, journalism, or a related field
  • 5+ years of public affairs, corporate communications, corporate social investment, nonprofit, stakeholder relations or related experience
  • Experience with crisis communications
  • Experience developing and implementing public affairs strategies and programs, including implementing best practices
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PPT and digital communications tools, including video, social media, Adobe Creative Suite, SharePoint, or other web-based applications
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of the time to other sites as well as work occasional evenings and weekend, as needed
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Knowledge and experience working with elected officials and appointed government officials
  • Involvement with community groups such as chambers of commerce, EDC's, and other local business groups
  • Chemicals and/or energy industry experience
  • Experience in event planning
  • Experience crafting social media strategies
