Job Description

Generate valid, high-quality, defensible analytical results from analytical and physical testing of raw materials utilized in product manufacturing. Provide timely response for analytical responses (e.g. field failures, product development issues and raw material/manufacturing problems). Effectively communicate analytical results and conclusions. Adhere to safety, quality and housekeeping laboratory guidelines. Resolve raw material and coatings problems through the use of analytical and physical measurement and analysis procedures. Serve as a resource for analytical techniques, polymer characterization and problem solving. Develop new analytical/physical testing methods and procedures or modify existing methods in response to business needs such as innovation, improved characterization and problem solving. Serve as a customer partner with the Product Coatings Group, including automotive and Global Supply Chain. Recommend new chemical testing instrumentation and analytical techniques to support current and future business needs. Work with colleagues, chemists, and interns on instrument operation, analytical methodology and Research and Development.

LOCATION: The Sherwin-Williams Company, 4440 Warrensville Center Road, Cleveland, OH 44128

REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry or Polymer Science and one (1) year of analytical chemistry experience in an industrial R&D laboratory and/or academic research setting.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Also requires one (1) year of experience in the following:

* Characterizing reactive chemistry systems (ex. epoxy) to understand structure-property relationships utilizing analytical chemistry and materials science equipment (FT-IR, DSC, TGA, UV/Vis, Raman, and NMR);
* Utilizing analytical equipment to understand polymer/performance attributes for problem solving and optimize performance including adhesion and mechanical failure for polymer based coatings including reactive or cross-linked systems;
* Characterizing morphology of polymer materials utilizing SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy; and
* Mechanical property testing (DSC and Instron) to understand polymer performance and structure property relationships of 1K (acrylate) and 2K polymer/coating (epoxy) systems and varying crosslinkers and inorganic filler material (pigments, etc.).
