Department Description

The UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is entirely dedicated to research on neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple systems atrophy, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's. Its animal facility houses one of the largest colony of animals involved in prion disease research in the world. It is also one of the largest transgenic facilities dedicated to a single group of diseases. It produces over 10,000 transgenic animals per year carrying diverse modifications of a single gene or multiple genes at once. Our mission is to find currently non-existent cures for these debilitating neurodegenerative diseases affecting large segments of the population. Our entire staff is dedicated to this mission, operating on the cutting-edge of science, while maintaining the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley Prusiner, MD.
