About This Role:

The Kansas Artificial Breeding Service Unit (KABSU) is looking to fill a position for a Laboratory Client Services Assistant. KABSU is a unit within the Dept of Animal Sciences and Industry that provides reproductive resources to livestock, equine and canine customers throughout Kansas and neighboring states. It is a self-funded fee-for-service business unit that serves a clientele profile of over 800 customers. KABSU interacts daily with approximately 35-40 customers through in-house direct contact or by telephone, written, or electronic communication. This position will receive and catalog over 300 cryogenic samples daily of livestock, equine and canine breeding semen as well as maintain a catalog inventory of over 2 million animal breeding samples cryogenically stored in the KABSU facility. The wholesale value of the maintained inventory is over 20 million dollars. The incorrect identification of a sample, a misplaced sample location or the loss of sample viability due to improper cryogenic handling will result in liability claims and a substantial loss of revenue to KABSU.

30% This position will receive approximately 300 frozen semen animal breeding samples daily. Samples will be received from the Kansas State University AS&I Department Animal Breeding Laboratory (KABSU), Customer Drop offs and Commercial Carrier Deliveries (UPS-FedEx). Reception of samples requires strict accountability and documentation of the condition (temperature), quantity and identification of the samples received. Prompt response and appropriate handling of the reception of all samples is necessary due to the cryogenic (liquid nitrogen) nature of the samples. This position is detail oriented with knowledge of cryogenics and animal reproduction preferred. A daily log of received samples is to be submitted daily to the appropriate accounting personnel. The ability to work with QuickBooks and Excel computer programs is required. The workplace environment for this position will encompass cryogenic and laboratory activities.

40 % This position will analyze lab report data for appropriate accession coding and classification. Accession coding requires a National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) Code Number, Registration Name and Number, Tattoo ID, Date of Sample Collection and Name of the Owner of the sample. This position will catalog the cryogenic inventory of over 2 million animal breeding genetic samples with a wholesale value of over 20 million dollars. The incorrect identification of a sample or a misplaced sample location will result in liability claims and a substantial loss of revenue to KABSU. This position requires excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, being self-motivated, and the ability to work independently.

10% KABSU has a clientele profile of over 800 customers. This position will be responsible to provide Essential detailed laboratory and analytical correspondence to approximately 25-30 customers daily regarding samples received and shipped. Communication will be written, verbal and electronic. A working knowledge and ease of communication with animal reproduction, genetics, and animal physiology terms is preferred. This position requires excellent communication skills to coordinate documentation with Accounting Personnel and the Storeroom Manager in a team environment to maintain accuracy of the stored sample inventory.

15% This position will process approximately 12-15 shipping request work orders daily. Samples for Essential shipment will be pulled from inventory and made available to the Storeroom Manager with appropriate documentation. Time management is required to make sure shipments comply with commercial carrier pick up schedule. This position will be cross trained to prepare commercial carrier shipping documents.

5% This position will assist the storeroom manager with maintaining storage tank levels of liquid nitrogen to assure that the appropriate cryogenic environment for sample preservation is operational.
