Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
The department invites applications for one or more faculty positions in Health Care Management with areas of expertise in healthcare finance, human resources, leadership, and quality management. Faculty rank and tenure track status is dependent upon the candidate's qualifications.

  • Candidates must have a doctorate in health care management or a closely related field to be considered for the tenure-track position.
  • All other candidates must have a master's degree in health administration or a closely related field and relevant work experience.

The Department especially seeks applicants with:
  • Teaching and professional experience who can facilitate students' application of principles and concepts in healthcare scenarios.
  • Health care industry, teaching, or other relevant experience.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Health Care Management program began in 1972 and has been continuously certified by AUPHA since 1984. With over 1,400 graduates, the program has a strong network of professionals working in health systems, physician practices, senior care organizations, and other health care organizations throughout North Carolina and the nation. Appalachian State also offers a hybrid online MHA degree that began in the fall of 2016. MHA is accredited by CAHME with over 1,500 graduates. The Health Care Management program is located within the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) and offers a residential program and is exploring an online option.

Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities it serves through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach. BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate degree programs and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six departments: Nursing; Nutrition and Health Care Management; Public Health and Exercise Science; Recreation Management and Physical Education; Rehabilitation Sciences; and Social Work.

The academic programs are located in the Holmes Convocation Center and in the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art, 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college mission extends to App State's new Hickory Campus for the same excellence that App State is known for. The college also supports the Institute for Health and Human Services and has collaborative partnerships with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program, the Appalachian Regional Health System and numerous other health agencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary instructional duties may include introduction to healthcare systems, leadership, quality management, operations, project management, and/or data management at the undergraduate or graduate levels for the tenure track position, and instructional duties will be at the undergraduate level for the lecturer position.

Successful applicants will have a focus on teaching excellence in both the traditional face-to-face and online environments. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active program of scholarship as well as participate in service activities at the program, department, college, university, profession, and community levels. Responsibilities also include advising, coaching, and mentoring students.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
