Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under minimal direction and supervision, participates in the design, implementation, maintenance and operation of medical equipment IT needs within the HFHS. Installs, maintains and updates hardware software and networks as required. Participates in the development and training programs for department personnel related to computer systems.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installs programs and system updates for the Clinical Engineering supported medical computer systems.
  • Monitors the various medical equipment networks for system problems. Acts as a trouble-shooter, investigating problem origin, nature and possible resolutions.
  • Trains system users on how to access data and provides follow-up to user departments as necessary.
  • Performs medical computer equipment repair or arranges for the appropriate repair personnel.
  • Monitors inventory and movement of computer equipment throughout the HFHS.
  • Modifies and maintains existing and new medical equipment software programs
  • Helps in designing, implementing and maintaining PACS systems for medical applications in Diagnostic Radiology.
  • Acts as the liaison between Clinical Engineering and Corporate Information Technology on projects involving corporate computer resources and network.
  • Also works with Information Technology to get hardware repaired and to resolve wcorporate networking issues.
  • Estimates system complexity and works with the Director to determine costs and ensure cost effectiveness for proposed new systems or modifications.
  • Designs and specifies systems using current technology including: (a) preparing specifications for systems improvements, (b) defining systems security and control procedures, (c) developing system testing and conversion plans, (d) evaluating results of program and procedure tests, and (e) documenting results of design and testing.
  • Performs necessary system administration tasks relating to the HFHS medical equipment computers, servers, and networks, including, but not limited too, regularly applying patches and updates to servers, configuring and maintaining a system of backups for the servers, installing, configuring, and managing computer hardware and software.
  • Is crossed trained on all essential computer systems and provides support to other Clinical Engineering technicians.
  • Engages in disaster recovery planning and documentation.
  • Requires the planning skills to plan for systems design, testing, conversion and installation, as well as maintaining, medical equipment information systems.
  • Ability to install and understand the functions of personal computer hardware.
  • Requires good interpersonal skills to be able to communicate with and train the system users, provide follow-up with system problems, and interact with various levels of Henry Ford Health System personnel.
  • Maintains documentation in accordance with department policy. Submits monthly progress reports as required.
  • Complete assignments and goals as established by department manager/lead technician.
  • Assumes delegated responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer technology, Computer Engineering or equivalent third party training and related experience required.
  • Three to Five (3-5) years of experience working within a health care IT or Clinical Engineering department.
  • Working knowledge of the following:
    • Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7
    • Windows 2003/NT
    • Windows Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access
    • Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) and Apache HTTP Server
    • Outlook email server or similar SMTP server
    • Symantec Backup Exec or similar software.
    • Novell
    • MS-DOS
