Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that trucks, tools, and assigned equipment are properly used, and maintained.

  • Climbs poles and operates out of bucket truck.

  • Operate and maintain all line equipment.

  • Bypass breakers in substations and downstream devices.

  • Preforms transmission switching with Generation and Transmission provider.

  • Provides training and leadership for Apprentice Linemen.

  • Works on troubleshoots overhead and underground lines in energized and de-energized states.

  • Ensures that all safety procedures and precautions are followed.

  • Satisfies call-out rotation, duties, and responsibilities.

  • Maintains transformer, meter, and light inventory on trucks.

  • Provides on-the-job training to trainees and other subordinates and helpers.

  • Resides within a reasonable response time distance (approx. 15 minutes) to service area.

  • Performs advanced trouble-shooting skills.

  • Thorough knowledge and application of cooperative, NESC, NEC, REA, OSHA, state, and other regulatory agency procedures and rules in the performance of all work.

  • Thorough knowledge of cooperative departments and procedures which is gained through participation in a cooperative cross-training program.

  • Expected to fill in during crew supervisor absences.

  • Thorough knowledge of Bluebonnet policies and guidelines.

  • Uses experience and independent judgment to research and resolve complex problems related to work orders and member accounts.

  • General awareness of current developments in areas of interest to the department.

  • Required to be available to work weekends, holidays and non-standard hours as needed, outside of normal call-out rotation.

  • Maintain professional working relationships with all employees, members, and vendors at all times.

  • Maintain regular attendance; arrives to work on time and is ready to work.

  • Use safe work practices at all times and in all situations.

  • Must be able to appropriately handle confidential information and act within the practices established by the Bluebonnet Red Flag policy.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in the utility industry and/or equivalent education.

Licensing and Certification:

  • DOL Journeyman Lineworker certification preferred.
  • Must be certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood-borne pathogens.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated thorough understanding (through written Bluebonnet exam) of information found in the NWLC modules, safety manual, Bluebonnet policies and procedures, switching procedures, OSHA and NESC guidelines.
  • Proficient computer skills in enterprise systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner; focused on improvement or problem resolution in a constructive, positive, and professional manner.

  • Demonstrated exemplary leadership skills that are continuously being developed and enhanced.

  • Maintain familiarity with the basic techniques of emergency response including: First Aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogens, in order to be prepared to provide emergency treatment to fellow employees and the general public if needed.

  • Basic computer skills in the following applications: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, NISC applications, time entry, and work order processing.

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Office Equipment including computer, IPad, printer, copier, fax, etc.
  • May be required to drive a cooperative vehicle.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • According to established business need, must maintain a mobile phone and appropriate communications plan.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires repetitive motion of hands and fingers such as dialing and keyboarding.
  • Will work on pole or in bucket, reaches and bends to perform work on the pole usually using hand tools weighing as much as 20 lbs.
  • Climbs a pole with belt and equipment or hand tools weighing 40 - 50 lbs.
  • Pushes and pulls transformers for proper placement for installation.
  • Loads cable and other materials onto truck at warehouse.
  • Operates hydraulic or manual tamp when backfilling dirt around poles.
  • Clears brush in utility easement.
  • Performs some digging when installing underground lines.

Work Environment:

  • Extended time spent outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • May work at heights up to 100 + feet above ground.
  • Works in no or low light conditions - using hand held lantern or spot lights.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy and insect stings.
  • Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
  • Required to work alone and on a team.
