Job Description

JOB TITLE:

Heavy Equipment operator

JOB PURPOSE:

Operate heavy power construction equipment required to maintain, repair, excavate, or erect the University's grounds, buildings, and structures.

This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming's . Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closure based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Remove ice and snow from University parking lots, streets and sidewalks; operate a rotary blade snow removal truck; and load and transport snow from campus using front-end loaders and dump trucks.
  • Level and contour dirt roads on campus and outlying farms using motor grader.
  • Mix, load, transport and deposit topsoil for use in campus landscaping using a variety of heavy equipment including dozer, loaders, motor grader, or skid loaders.
  • Load, transport, and deposit gravel or asphalt for street and road repairs.
  • Operate backhoe and trenching machines to excavate ditches and trenches necessary to repair or install underground utilities.
  • Operate street sweeping machine to maintain a clean campus environment.
  • Operate mobile overhead cranes with the assistance of radio or hand signals for project work requiring crane operations such as roof work; work with contractors needing crane operation assistance.
  • Prepare the crane rigging and determine if the crane operation work is safe; if work is determined by the Heavy Equipment Operator to not be safe (high winds, weight limitations, high electrical wires, too confined an area, unsafe to property or life, etc.), the Heavy Equipment Operator has the authority to call off the crane operation.
  • Perform manual labor such as digging, shoveling concrete or asphalt, removal of concrete or asphalt, or other related duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School Diploma or GED, plus completion of related technical or vocational education/training

Experience: 2 years work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:

  • Valid Class A commercial driver's license with airbrake designation.
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the .
  • Overhead mobile crane operation certification or the ability to be certified as an overhead mobile crane operator within one year from point of hire.
  • Medical Examiner certification (health card required with Class A CDL with airbrake).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

* Basic and routine construction drawings, blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and specifications.

* Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

* Heavy power construction equipment operation.

Skills and Abilities to:

* Safely operate heavy equipment such as motor graders, loaders, skid loaders, dozers, rotary blade snow removal trucks, street sweeping machines, backhoe and trenching machinery, and overhead mobile cranes.

* Perform manual labor such as digging or shoveling.

* Move objects weighing up to 100 pounds regularly with or without reasonable accommodation.

* Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.
