This position performs technical responsibilities in support of the 24/7 needs of the Emergency and Critical Care units (ECC) of UW Veterinary Care (UWVC). Responsibilities:

Tasks:
  • Work closely with other hospital services to call in back-up support for emergent patient care
  • Assist with the care and regular nursing needs for patients housed in critical care unit
  • Assist with catheter placement (iv, urinary, etc.)
  • Assist with filling pharmaceutical requests after-hours for hospitalized patients
  • Assist in radiographing patients after-hours
  • Assist with sedation and anesthesia for patients in the ECC
  • Assist the Emergency and Critical Care Units (ECC) with client communications. Document client
    communications in the patient log
  • Ensure charges are entered in a timely and correct manner for hospital patients
  • Collect and submit patient lab samples
  • Follow all hospital and UW campus policies and procedures
  • Gain knowledge on unit equipment and use. Assist with unit equipment operation and regular
    maintenance. Advise supervisor of equipment issues or repair needs, as needed.
  • Participate in rotating on-call shifts as required by the hospital
  • Participate and assist in the training and mentoring of less experienced staff and students
  • Prioritize, triage and stabilization of patients
  • Bring a positive, helpful attitude to the unit and the hospital
  • Be a team player, and work together with colleagues to best meet patient needs

Qualifications:

Highly qualified candidates will have the following: a minimum of 2 years' experience working as a critical care/ emergency technician; excellent technical skills, communication skills, including the ability to triage phone calls, perform patient intake, perform treatments, understanding of critical cases to assist the doctors. Ability to multitask and prioritize while assisting/teaching 4th year students. Ability to function calmly in stressful situations and to work cooperatively with other people.

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.

This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 1, 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.

License/Certification:

Preferred
CVT - Certified Veterinary Technician
or eligible to obtain Wisconsin licensure within 12 months

Work Schedule:

Expected schedule is 10:00am-8:00pm weekdays, 7:00am - 5:00pm every other weekend, with rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $22.00 HOURLY

This position is being posted at Vet Tech levels 1, 2 and 3. Level and pay are commensurate with experience.

Sign-on Bonus of 5% of base pay (based on FTE) to be paid over the first year of employment (Minimum of $1,800+ for Veterinary Technicians)!

To qualify for Level 1: Entry level, new CVT grad or awaiting to sit for the CVT exam, or some CVT working experience with no specialization.

To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 3 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for specialization.

To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.
