About the College/Unit/Department
In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.

Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.

In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

Position Summary
Oversee all aspects of operations at the Gibbs Farm. This employee will interact with UGA scientists about the research being conducted and will plan, organize, supervise, and participate in the day-to-day operations of the farm. The individual in this position will supervise farm workers, assist in managing the budget, maintain records and data about the research being conducted, maintain equipment and buildings and perform any other duties that arise. This individual will be the sole contact for this farm, but will report to the Research Station Superintendent, who oversees all of the Tifton research farms.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Thorough knowledge of safe farm equipment operation, maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists to suggest new procedures and implement experimental protocols that may not align with typical agricultural procedures.
  • Schedule and implement irrigation scheduling across diverse cropping systems and stages of crop growth.
  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships with scientists, research teams, industry and the public.
  • Responsible for maintaining detailed records and preparing reports regarding field operations, pesticide applications, irrigation applications, and harvest procedures.
  • Direct subordinates to address concerns in a timely manner and maintain the appearance of the farm in a way that reflects the serious nature of CAES missions.

  • Coordinate research, personnel and equipment
  • Organize personnel and equipment to assist scientists with implementing protocols
  • Consider and select best management practices as applied to crop protection, equipment maintenance, road maintenance, building maintenance and protection of state assets
  • Coordinate use of large agricultural equipment among campus stakeholders
  • Schedule and implement irrigation applications using all available types of equipment and technologies

Record Keeping, Land Use & Recommendations
  • Record Keeping: implement Cooperative Extension recommended practices for soil sample acquisition and submission
  • Calibrate equipment and make prescribed applications of fertilizer, lime and pesticides to experimental land
  • Maintain inventory of tools, lubricants, filters and consumable shop supplies
  • Research and make informed recommendations about acquisition of new equipment to support farm operations
  • Direct and oversee modification of conventional agricultural equipment to meet research needs
  • Plan, supervise installation, and rapidly adopt new precision agriculture technologies that support research programs and personnel efficiencies
