Job Summary

This is a contract role that ends two years from the hire date and requires once a week (and as needed) onsite work at our Mission Bay campus in San Francisco.

We are seeking a full-time Qualitative & Mixed Methods Analyst to work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple projects related to improving care for older adults with serious illness. The most substantial of these is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project aimed at improving hospice care for racial and ethnic minoritized older adults with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

The Qualitative & Mixed Methods Analyst will work with the research team to participate in data analysis and synthesis of qualitative research, assisting with analyzing and coding qualitative data, managing the Atlas.ti database, conceptualizing and writing manuscripts, and assisting in the development of grant applications.Tasks also include project planning, organization and administrative tasks around the day-to-day tasks associated with the research project. The Qualitative & Mixed Methods Analyst will work with team members to recruit, coordinate and collaborate with members of adivsory groups, representing UCSF and the research team in community outreach and community engagement, assisting with recruitment of participants for each part of the project, and serving as a liason between research participants and the research PI. Additional tasks for this role include refining and pilot testing: interview guides, survey instrument and structured observation materials; building and maintaining a quantitative and qualitative databases, setting up website/outward-facing contents/materials, training and guiding other staff on the study team, as well as performing other study-related operational/adminstrative tasks to ensure study success. The Qualitative & Mixed Methods Analyst may additionally work with the PI to provide consultations to faculty, trainees, and staff regarding primary data collection activities among older adults made vulnerable by medical and social circumstances. These activities will occurr in conjunction with the UCSF Pepper Center Vulnerable Aging Research Core.

The ideal candidate would have a familiarity with qualitative and mixed methods research. In addition, familiarity or experience with work related to health equity and anti-racism, aging, serious illness, hospice or grief, would be preferred. We are seeking an individual who is highly collaborative, mission-driven, and has a strong interest in, and ideally background in, research related to diverse populations, equity, older adults, hospice care, dementia care, and/or policy. A successful candidate is highly organized and able to prioritize multiple deadlines and competing tasks. Working with sensitive participant data requires utmost discretion and confidentiality. This position will be perform duties related to a study that aims to generate data to address inequities in access to and quality of hospice care at end-of-life among Black/African American, Latino/x/Hispanic, Latinx, Asian, Hawaiian Native, Pacific Islander American, or multiracial older adults with dementia, and thus, candidates who identify as Black/African American/ multiracial/Latino/Hispanic OR are fluent in Chinese / Mandarin/ Cantonese/Spanish are preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and one or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience and proficiency in qualitative data analysis and research.
  • The ability to think creatively and work with teams to come up with creative solutions to problems.
  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Training or experience in social sciences field (e.g., public health, sociology, anthropology, health policy).
  • Ability to interface with and work well in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse communities in the context of community-based research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a health care or social scientific field (e.g., MPH, MS, MA)
  • Personal, academic, or professional experience around health equity.
  • Personal, academic, or professional experience with hospice, palliative care, end-of-life care, or grief.
  • Experience working in or conducting research within a healthcare setting or experience and familiarity with healthcare or health policy.
  • Experience working in community-engaged research or at a community-based organization.
  • Experience analyzing qualitative data using Atlas.ti or other qualitative data analysis software.
  • Experience in academic writing, including experiencing in drafting and editing manuscripts, white papers, research reports and grant proposals.
  • Experience in program evaluation and improvement.
  • Identifies as Black/African American/multiracial/Latino/Hispanic OR are fluent in Chinese / Mandarin/ Cantonese/Spanish.
