Job Description

Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator the Project Director and Manager of Research Administration conduct specific research protocols associated with assigned research projects. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age and culture specific needs of the participants.

Responsibilities:

The RA will assist the PI Project Director and research team on multiple research projects. These projects primarily focus on systematic reviews or meta-analyses of the behavioral medical and social science literature but may also involve primary-level data collection with patients or participants of all ages (e.g. tobacco use in pregnant mothers heart failure patients).

Primary tasks involve (a) conducting electronic bibliographic database searches of the behavioral or biomedical health literature (b) reviewing and cataloguing records obtained through the electronic bibliographic database searches (c) reviewing full-length manuscripts against inclusion/exclusion criteria (d) extensively coding and extracting data from studies using a detailed coding form and (e) calculating effect sizes from data available in manuscripts.

Position hours are typically fixed but requires occasional flexibility in scheduling to accommodate program needs.
The RA will also:

* Assist in preparation of project protocols coding intervention or assessment materials.

* Participates in ongoing refinement of project protocols. Suggests improvements to data collection tools where appropriate.

* Gather articles manuals and information from library and other resources as requested.

* Collects research data by accurately qualitative coding and extracting data from published and unpublished manuscripts and documenting activities as directed. Maintains documentation of data collection and assist with data management. Maintains accurate study records ensuring data integrity.

* Enters data into computer database.

* Function as an independent RA making independent judgments when coding the scientific literature. Communicates with the PI Project Director or research team regarding coding decisions.

* Works with all members of project team to achieve established goals.

* Exceptional time-management skills to meet project deadlines.

* Attends regularly scheduled supervision team meetings conference calls and program meetings as required by supervisor(s).

* Reports to Project Director if problems are encountered in performing assigned activities suggesting solutions to those problems. Works with the Project Director to maximize performance of the project.

* Works collaboratively with study staff in the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at the Miriam Hospital and collaborators and business partners located at external facilities (e.g. Brown University).

* Performs other related duties as required.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Bachelor*s or Master*s Degree in a health or social science discipline.

EXPERIENCE:

Applicants should have (a) course work in research methods and/or statistics (undergraduate or graduate level) (b) ability to carefully read and understand behavioral medical and social science literature (e.g. journal articles public health reports) (c) experience using spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) statistical (e.g. SPSS) or other database software (e.g. Access) as well as reference database managers (e.g. EndNote) (d) strong interpersonal skills and (e) strong research methods. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate (f) attention to detail (g) strong research ethics (h) exceptional time-management skills and (i) the ability to work independently for extended periods of time. Preferences will be given to candidates with experience conducting systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Participant interviewing experience is a plus.
