Position Overview
The Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University seeks an innovative and student-focused Director of Student Media to guide all facets of its national award-winning student media operations. The Director will advise students in their creation of news and other media content, and will help them develop the skills they need to thrive as professionals in the modern media marketplace. The Director will also teach one course every semester and provide other service to the college through academic advising and serving on college and university committees. The ideal candidate is an exceptional journalist who has the heart of a teacher, shares Marquette's Jesuit mission, and is committed to student media's culture of excellence, collaboration, kindness and inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Serve as advisor to all student media, which operate under the banner of the Marquette Wire and include the Marquette Tribune, the Marquette Journal, MUTV, and Marquette Radio.
2. Teach one course in the Journalism and Media Studies department every semester and serve on college and university committees.
3. Develop a long-term vision for student media and create and/or implement a strategic plan.
4. Create professional development opportunities for students through, among other things, regular trainings and workshops.
5. Serve as a mentor to student staff and look for ways to help them grow as communicators and leaders.
6. Provide regular advice and feedback to student media leaders through face-to-face meetings and critiques.
7. Oversee the student media budget, ensuring a fair and equitable distribution of salary and operational funds. Report on budget issues to the Dean of the college and to the University Board for Student Media.
8. Monitor equipment supply needs, make purchases, and oversee contracts with vendors.
9. Work with student media leaders to update the Marquette Wire ethics code, mission statement and statement on diversity, equity and inclusion as necessary.
10. Create and update Policies in the Student Media Handbook, which provide clear instruction on First Amendment Rights, professional standards, and legal and ethical issues such as libel, invasion of privacy, obscenity, copyright infringement and plagiarism.
11. Oversee all student travel (forms, expenditures, reimbursement).
12. Coordinate contest entries, ensuring the best student media content is submitted to various collegiate media contests and maintaining records of entries and results.
13. Serve as a member of the University Board of Student Media, providing regular feedback to the Board and working with the Board chair on the annual report
14. Participate in the interview process when the Board selects the student media leaders for the following year.
15. Establish a support network of advisors and alumni, and find ways (visits, workshops) to connect them with student staff.
16. Be available and visible to troubleshoot problems.
17. Help university advancement, the college dean, and the Board for Student Media fundraise for the Student Media Endowed Fund and other needs.
18. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Masters Degree preferred or substantial progress toward the terminal degree.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master's degree preferred in journalism or mass communication, or a Bachelor's in Journalism or Communications with a Master's in a related area (Business, Marketing)

  • Five years of professional journalism or related media experience.
  • Collegiate media advising experience or teaching experience in a college or university journalism department.
  • A commitment to professionalism, innovation, and ethical decision-making.
  • Strong rapport with students and a genuine desire to guide and mentor student media staff.
  • Commitment to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive organization and helping nurture a positive and collaborative culture.
  • Working knowledge of media operations/publication, platforms, and software.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Conversant in various aspects of media production including, but not limited to: news writing, feature writing, photojournalism, video news package creations, website development, formatting and layout.
  • Knowledgeable about integrating digital media innovation in a media organization and collaborating with editorial and creative professionals.
  • Computer literacy with Macintosh and desktop publishing networks, software programs for publication production and office management including, but not limited to Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Premiere, Audition, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc). Knowledge of WordPress and web publishing desirable.
  • Capable of preparing and monitoring budgets and finding creative solutions to monetary constraints.
  • Involved in professional associations and other forms of professional development.
