The Pharmacist Senior functions as a working shift supervisor for all staffing pharmacy shifts. These functions include daily staffing within the workflow: processing orders, checking dispenses, compounding, and handling phone calls. This position Collaborates with Pharmacy Administration to insure proper handling, and storage of medications both in the pharmacy and in other ancillary departments. This position services as the pharmacy supervisor on duty in absence of Pharmacy Operations Manager, and thus assists other team members with any problem solving issues as needed. In addition, will enforce policies and procedures as they relate to the practice of hospital pharmacy at Baptist Health Care. This position collaborates with the Operations Managers and Director of Inpatient Pharmacy to plan, organize, and implement shift responsibilities for pharmacists and technicians as needed, including facilitating down-staffing and call-out coverage procedures The Pharmacist Senior will lead by example for all team members, including facilitating the training of new pharmacist team members. The Pharmacist Senior will have a primary site of responsibility; however, will be responsible to report to all Baptist Health Care facilities (Gulf Breeze Hospital, Jay Hospital, etc.) as indicated by Pharmacy Administration. In the absence of a Pharmacy Operations Manager, the pharmacist senior will assist in managing the day-to-day issues throughout the department, and effectively communicates information to Pharmacy Administration as well as participates in various projects to optimize pharmacy operations and improve patient care at Baptist Health Care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the pharmacy as defined by the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
  • Responsible for facilitating the training, supervising, educating, and checking the work of supportive personnel; This will include pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, precepting pharmacy student(s) and pharmacy resident(s)
  • Function as "Site Supervisor" as scheduled or needed by pharmacy Administration. responsibilities as required, for the coordination of weekend and evening shifts which include supervising the part time pharmacists and supportive personnel, assigning work and delegating tasks and responsibilities, and for handling problems that arise during the absence or unavailability of the director of pharmacy services.
  • Responsible for conducting a minimum of one departmental annual in-service education lecture for at minimum Baptist Health Care Pharmacy Staff regarding either clinical, legal, or pharmacy operations.
  • Responsible for intradepartmental communication by staff meeting and in-service attendance. Also responsible for knowing content of departmental staff meeting minutes and memos and facilitating these minutes into daily practice. This includes providing oversight to all team members for celebration when correct and correction when needed. Maintains a working knowledge of the pharmacy policy and procedure manual.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct labeling of medication containers.
  • Responsible for all counseling of patients upon request.
  • Responsible for interpretation of physician medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness, informing them of any errors, omissions, or discrepancies and, based on an evaluation of the patient's condition, suggests appropriate or alternate drug therapy to the physician.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and proper patient medication profiles, monitoring to insure the proper choice of drug, dosage form, strength, length of therapy and interaction potential of the prescribed drug.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of, and conforming to legal requirements concerning the distribution of drugs, as well as good working knowledge of recent developments in the field of pharmacy (self continuing education by attending available conferences, meetings and seminars).
  • Responsible for the development, preparation, and compounding of special dosage forms of drugs not commercially available.
  • Responsible for performing monthly pharmacy and nursing station checks to ensure that medications are properly and safely stored, that excess and out dated drugs are removed, and that information regarding drug usage and administration is communicated to the nursing staff. Responsible to function as pharmacy liaison to assigned nursing units for the purpose of handling routine, day to day issues.
  • Maintains and assures quality control standards of the department by conducting drug usage evaluations (DUE) and quality assurance (QA) programs within guidelines of the DNV.
  • Responsible for the daily coordination of the manufacturing and distribution of sterile products, including intravenous admixtures, irrigating solutions, total parenteral nutrition solutions, chemotherapy products and miscellaneous products.
  • Responsible for conducting in-service education lectures for medical staff, nurses, pharmacists, students, and other health care personnel regarding drugs, procedures, and policies.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.


Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy Required or
  • Doctorate Pharmacy Required

Minimum Work Experience

  • 2 years Hospital pharmacist experience Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Pharmacist Licensed State of Florida Upon Hire Required
