This position works within a team of 6 Child Life Specialists to support patients undergoing cardiac surgery, awaiting and recovering from heart transplant, and receiving medical treatment for a variety of cardiac conditions. This role will work closely with interdisciplinary staff including PT and OT, Music therapy, Social work, and the medical team to provide individualized developmental support, procedural support for dressing changes, chest tube removals, PICC placements, etc. Will also provide coping support during prolonged admissions, sibling support, and bereavement support.

This Child Life Specialist, Cardiac ICU will:

  • Participate in therapeutic activities and programs to meet patients' psychosocial and developmental needs, and facilitate adjustment to health care experiences for patients.
  • Serving as member of multidisciplinary team.
  • Providing coping support for patients and families when faced with trauma/grief.
  • Delegate work assignments to volunteers and participating in clinical training of student interns.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Child Life, or a closely related field with a concentration in child life.
  • 600-hour Child Life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist.
  • General skills to resolve problems requiring the use of child development theory, professional child life principles, and experiencedbased knowledge.
  • Well-developed writing skills, and excellent communication skills including conflict resolution to effectively work as a team member.
