Summary/Primary Purpose: The Assistant to Community Center Director is responsible for providing delegated leadership, monitoring, and up keep of all activities needed in the Gymnasium, Sports Fields, Fitness Deck and other areas that may host Sports and Fitness event assigned by Community Center Director; along with all other duties. Responsible for the ongoing monitoring, equipment care, and promotion of all programs related to sports, leagues, tournaments, health, fitness and wellness.

It also comes with a responsibility of acting as representative of The Salvation Army with whomever the assistant consults, advocating for the Community Center Director/Program Director. Establish and maintain an environment conducive to the welfare and academic success of the student-athlete. Establish and maintain effective interactions with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide service, leadership and mentoring to all Community Center members, guests, and volunteer of all ages, ethnicity and backgrounds.
  2. Proactively ensure a safe and clean Sports & Recreation environment for all Community Center guests, volunteers, members and participants.
  3. Provide leadership by setting up activity equipment such as tables, instruments, electronics, etc.
  4. Monitor activities, as directed, to include opening gym and sports fields, special events, etc.
  5. Give additional support to the Sports & Recreation Aide, instructors, interns, coaches, referees and volunteers.
  6. Assist in managing any basketball programming created by the Community Center Director/ Basketball Program Director.
  7. Assist in the development, improvement and implementation of systems that safeguard any/all facilities, supplies and equipment related to Sports & Recreation programs.
  8. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and notify the Community Center Director of the need for significant or immediate repair of supplies and equipment.
  9. Transport patrons by vehicle to various events as needed; including but not limited to the Christmas season.
  10. Participate in any required training and attend all scheduled team meetings as directed by the Community Center Director.
  11. Participate in the Afterschool program, adult basketball leagues, summer day camp, and kettle season. Organize practice schedules, travel arrangements, parent meetings, database and mailing systems.
  12. Plan and coordinate community relations and work with different areas in the community and create volunteer/ fund raising opportunities for the young student-athletes.
  13. Work with the coaching staff on the flow of daily correspondence and day to day operations. Work with Community Center Director/Basketball Program Director, on development of short -an- long range planning, improvements/changes to current program policies/procedures.
  14. Will help manage along-side the Community Center Director/ Basketball Program Director all aspects of recruiting within the sports program.
  15. Serve as the liaison to the youth to coordinate with respective level coaches to do report card checks in favor of our GPA policy. Assist with the monitoring of academic progress of student-athletes.
  16. Assisting to oversee the daily operation of the youth basketball programs, as instructed by the Community Center Director/Basketball Program Director.
  17. Driving is an essential function of this position.
  18. All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Any Delegations assigned by the Community Center Director/Basketball Program Director.

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent, 2 years' experience required.

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

  1. Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  2. The ability to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.
  3. Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, 10-key, attention to detail and filing.
  4. Good communication skills both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  5. Strong creativity and socialization skills.
  6. Strong knowledge of basketball and the inner-city community culture.
  7. Effective communication both written and orally.
  8. Ability to work with diverse groups of student-athletes
  9. Ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills
  10. Ability to understand simple budgeting principles
  11. demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters.

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business. Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 90 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army.

Employee may often be required to engage in rigorous activities. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying objects (50 lbs.)

Working Conditions: This position requires working in outdoor conditions. There is moderate noise level for this position.
