Job Summary

The Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Chief of Staff serves as an executive officer of the institution, reporting to and serving under the direction of the University President. The Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Chief of Staff serves as a key strategic partner to the organization's leadership, delivering project management, strategic planning, and implementation support to further the University's strategic vision and the Presidents key organizational initiatives. Develops opportunities for increased interaction with private and public entities to expand the impact of the University in the region and the state. Serves as a trusted partner in the Office of the President to ensure that insight into opportunities for continued improvement and innovation are communicated and recommended while providing high-level support and guidance to ensure effective implementation of the University's strategic plan and other initiatives. The Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Chief of Staff also serves as the senior officer of the Office of Board Relations.

Job Description

Typical duties include but not limited to:

  • Oversees and directs institution wide special initiatives and projects.
  • Develops innovative services and experiences that drive improved performance and academic opportunities for students in partnership and collaboration with faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners.
  • Leverages strong project management skills to lead strategic initiatives across the organization and oversees the execution of the strategic plan. Monitors project progress, tracks key performance indicators, and implements corrective actions as needed to maintain timelines and achieve objectives.
  • Collaborates with the executive team and oversees strategic priorities aligned with the University's strategic plan and objectives. Facilitates coordination among departments to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Identifies innovative solutions that improve the University in a holistic manner and recommends enhancements to existing systems and processes. Supervises and supports implementation of solutions across the organization.
  • Builds strategies, facilitates planning sessions, and drives change activities. This includes acquiring community buy-in, ownership, and accountability, and coordinating the efforts of university-wide teams, external agencies and business and industry leaders, and third-party contractors/consultants to deliver projects and goals according to plan.
  • Conducts research, analyzes data, and provides insight to inform decision-making processes.
  • Develops opportunities for increased interaction with private and public entities to expand the impact of the University in the region and the state, cultivating relationships with external partners, stakeholders, and community members to advance the University's interests.
  • Involves, serves, and/or takes leadership roles at regional non-profit and economic development agencies to represent the University.
  • Represents the University at meetings, conferences, and events, advocating for key priorities and initiatives.
  • Responds to inquiries, addresses concerns, and maintains positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Partners with stakeholders to identify, define, and execute significant process improvement projects while providing leadership support to strategic planning efforts, leading cross-functional initiatives and special projects, ensuring timely execution and delivery of outcomes.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Serves as a liaison between the executive leadership team and the Board of Trustees for long term Strategic Initiative alignment, facilitating communication and collaboration.
  • Provides leadership and acts as a resource for the Office of Board Relations providing support, guidance, and assistance as needed to fulfill their roles effectively.Collaborates with board committees, task forces, and working groups to advance strategic initiatives and achieve organizational objectives.
  • Maintains Financial Disclosure in accordance with Chapter 112 F.S.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either fourteen years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years of progressively responsible experience in administrative leadership in higher education.
  • Proven experience in a senior management role, preferably as a Chief of Staff or similar position.
  • Three years of experience with governing board operations.
  • Experience in the development and evaluation of new and innovative university programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with building collaborative relationships with executives, trustees, elected officials, and other senior level constituents.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration or closely related field.
  • Six years of professional full-time experience in a growing comprehensive university at a senior administrator level or above.
  • Administrative experience in Florida's State University System (SUS).

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Skill in political acumen with a keen sense of how and when to engage the participation of different constituencies.
  • Skill in leading teams, setting goals, monitoring performance, and holding a team accountable for outcomes.
  • Skill in public speaking and ability to effectively and professionally represent the University and the President to internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with a diverse group of colleagues, students, faculty, community leaders, business and industry partners, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to serve as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivate a shared vision, and motivate others to transfer vision into action.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the establishment, interpretation, application, and enforcement of all rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to travel to off-campus locations locally, in-state and out of state to attend various meetings with community members, University supporters, city and county officials, state officials, peers and vendors.

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
