The Operations Superintendent is responsible to ensure the terminal operates in a safe and environmentally compliant manner while providing the highest possible operating efficiencies. This position has full empowerment to make decisions to achieve cost-effective terminal results following financial, safety, environmental, qualify and operational procedures and policies.

  • Directs, coordinates, delegates, supervises and approves all cargo-handling operations, documentation and payroll performed by union supervision and holds them accountable for results. Takes immediate, appropriate corrective action for non-compliance.
  • Coordinates labor allocations, hiring and manpower assignments as required, ensuring lowest cost per ton is achieved while unloading railcars, storing cargo and loading vessels without compromise to quality of cargo, air or water and safety of people or equipment.
  • Interfaces and communicates with customers, agents, rail companies, PMA and pilots association to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery, unloading, loading and release of railcars and vessels. Follows and coordinates handling and scheduling of all cargos and communicates cargo status to all where applicable.
  • Ensures the safety, health and environmental welfare of personnel on the Terminal by initiating immediate corrective action for non-compliance of environmental, health and safety policies and procedures. Originates and routes injury and incident reports within 2-hours of any occurrence.
  • Learns, understands and has direct knowledge of the terms and rules contained within the applicable labor agreements such as but not limited to: PCLCD and PCMSC regarding performance and behavior on the job. Maintains an awareness of labor relations issues in order to effectively deal with organized labor.
  • Thoroughly understands, follows and enforces all cleaning procedures and requirements regarding cargo changes by cargo type and destinations.
  • Coordinates or prepares and completes accurate descriptive shift and cargo-handling reports and documentation. Performs record-keeping and reporting routing as required by the end of shift.
  • Other duties as required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 3 years managing labor preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Extensive rigging expertise, including load/stress and calculation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
  • Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.
  • TWIC card required.

Work Environment:
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management
  • 3 years managing related union labor
  • Must have valid driver's license
  • Thorough knowledge of principles of terminal operations
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
  • Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for terminal environment.
