Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse Surgical First Assistant (RNFA) is a professional nurse that requires advanced training in surgical first assisting from a CCI accredited school of higher learning. The Surgical First Assistant shall provide aid in exposure, homeostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The surgical assistant also performs perioperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. The RNFA will also function in the role of Circulating RN when not first-assisting. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills that enhance team functioning in the operating room. Maintains professional manner at all times, demonstrating flexibility.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

1. Current and valid state RN License.

2. Must be certified in perioperative nursing.

3. Must be a graduate from a surgical assisting program accredited through the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).

4. Has demonstrated leadership skills that enhance team functioning in an emergency situation.

5. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

6. A minimum of 3 years of experience in Perioperative Nursing.
