JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

American Sign Language Interpreter

Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities

The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is seeking one American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide effective communication for City of Chicago events, programs, and services. Interpreting settings can include press conferences, community engagement events, City Council meetings, public programming and workshops, 1-1 meetings with a member of the public and city department, interpreting for staff member, and any other needs where interpretation is requested. This role is based at City Hall, and interpreting will take place at City Hall, other City departments and locations throughout the City of Chicago, in person, or via virtual platforms. You will join the Communications Access Team, an experienced team that includes three other ASL interpreters and deaf and hard of hearing staff members.

Number of Positions: 1

* Provides effective communication of spoken English into ASL, CASE, and via transliterating, or other preferred methods as requested.

* Maintains a good working relationship with colleagues both at MOPD and at other City departments demonstrating professionalism in communication style, feedback, providing information and adhering to professional conduct, attire, and standards.

* Strictly adheres to confidentiality as required by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/NAD (National Association of the Deaf) Code of Professional Conduct, and other ASL interpreter code of ethics standards, and City of Chicago policies and procedures.

* Works effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues; independently and as part of an interpreting team for technical and longer meetings.

* Provides and prepares for interpretation services that involve complex and/or sensitive topics and conducts advance preparation as needed to learn about possible topics that will be presented.

* Maintains compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements, and immediately report if any changes to the status may occur.

* Effectively represents the department, including in competence, effectiveness, appearance, and professionalism, when interacting with residents, community leaders, City employees, elected officials, organizations supporting the City's mission.

* Effectively use communication-related technology to assist clients and other staff as required.

* Ensure all equipment or other arrangements are in place at locations where needed.

* Assists with coordination and scheduling of additional interpreters as needed.

* Completes additional and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications - External

Education, Training, and Experience

- High School Diploma or equivalent required

- A minimum of (3) three years' work experience as a Certified Interpreter

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

- Must be nationally certified by any of the American Sign Language (ASL) credentialing bodies, including the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD), or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) at a master or advanced level, or equivalent.

- Must be licensed with the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) at the time of hire; out-of-state applicants must be licensed with IDHHC within 60 days of start date.

NOTE: You must provide a valid US Driver's License or State ID at the time of processing.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete a skills assessment and an interview. The candidate that possesses the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview and skills assessment, will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing one or more of the following:

- Trained in Protactile ASL.

- Experience in providing services to DeafBlind individuals.

- Knowledge of additional spoken languages (Spanish, Chinese, Polish or other signed languages)

- Experience in providing transliteration.

- Licensed with the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) at an Advanced or Master Level.

- Nationally certified by any of the ASL interpreting credentialing bodies including the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD), or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI), at a master or advanced level.

- Current member of RID in good standing.
