We are seeking a full time Genetic Counselor II to join the Division of Genetics and Genomics at Boston Children's Hospital (Harvard Medical School). This position is within an active and expanding Genetics and Metabolism Program that provides diagnostic, therapeutic and counseling services and research activities, with a volume of over 6,000 clinical outpatients and 700 inpatients per year. Our genetic counselors collaborate with our partners across Boston Children's Hospital and affiliated hospitals on Clinical Genomics and Quality Improvement initiatives as well as implementation of clinical and research programs. This is a clinical position and the genetic counselor's responsibilities will include joining physician teams in clinic and is not limited to the following: opportunities to work with principal investigators on research studies. This position will include supporting the inpatient service with the Genetics consult team.

This Genetic Counselor II will be responsible for:

  • Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for specific hereditary disorders. Interprets family history, clinical and genetic findings to predict risk to patient. Obtains and reviews medical, developmental and family history information as part of diagnostic team. Ascertains needs and agendas of patients/ families.
  • Review medical and genetic testing records as well as literature and computer data bases as part of diagnostic evaluations in genetics.
  • Review visit documentation, along with follow up on all genetic testing ordered, as well as patient and family follow-up.
  • Active participation in walk rounds, genetic case conference and other educational activities is a must.
  • Screens referrals for outpatient service identifying hospital services needed for patient and suggesting alternative measures for utilizing these services. Responds to inquiries related to diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, genetic testing and pregnancy exposures.
  • Coordinates one or more clinics in assigned Department/Division/Program. Devises and monitors appointments and schedules for multiple providers.
  • Identifies, contacts and screens potential participants/families for eligibility of participation in research studies. Obtains informed consent for study participation from eligible individuals/families. Responds to inquiries related to research eligibility and procedures, diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks and genetic testing within scope of research project.
  • Assists in interviewing, orientation and training of other genetic counselors and study staff.
  • Develops and participates in genetics education programs for physicians, other health professionals and lay populations. Trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate level counseling students.
  • Collaborates in developing written documents and web-based materials for a variety of purposes including journal publications and conference presentations.

In order to qualify, you must have:

  • Current Massachusetts license as a Genetic Counselor
  • Current Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling and at least two year's of directly related experience.
  • Good communication skills
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of clinical, scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and in depth, cross functional experienced based knowledge.
  • Well developed writing skills.
