Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Welder I is responsible for assembling pieces of metal together or repairing damage in metal components using heavy machinery that emits high heat, melting the metal into shape. The Welder I will fuse materials, such as steel, together to create mechanisms or to fix things that are broken.  The Welder I reports to the 2nd Shift Fabrication Lead.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Include the following, but other duties may be assigned.
  • Safely setup and operate manual welding machinery, in addition to cranes, forklifts, and pallet jacks.
  • Remove and repair unacceptable welds with MIG welder and grinder to meet quality guidelines.
  • Perform MIG welding, reading prints and weld symbols.
  • Use MIG hardwire spray on thin and thick gauge steel material with fixed jigs or clamps.
  • Use welding process including, (MIG, GMAW) to weld metal components.
  • Remove loose materials and thick scale, slag or rust to prepare material surfaces for welding.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment to complete all welding projects on-time and according to specifications.
  • Inspect grooves, angles and gap allowances with micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Clamp, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating parts, warping, shrinking, distortion, and expansion of materials.
  • Set up equipment and weld parts according to welding chart specifications and type.
  • Prepare broken parts for welding by properly grooving and scarfing surfaces.
  • Position, align, and secure parts and assemble with strategies and combination square sand calipers.
  • Scrape off excess spatter and other materials using portable grinders and arc-cutting equipment.
  • Adjust gas flow and pressure to create and maintain desired flames.
  • Dissemble, correct, and reassemble defective components.
  • Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures.
  • Repair products and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps.
  • Inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
  • Accurately maintain required records (production traveler, material traceability, and production records).
  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned work area in accordance with standard 5S principles and Bauer policies.
  • Monitor welding equipment functionality and report maintenance needs.
  • Assist other new welders in learning welding skills.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required, Or completion of welding school program.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of welding experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Professional Certification (e.g., as AWS Welding Certificate) required or the ability to be certified within six (6) months of employment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Proven ability to use general measuring and precision devices such as tape measures, scales, angle finders, and metal thickness gauges.
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
  • Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Proficient in all positions with GMAW.
  • Proficient in welding best practices and visual inspection.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure welding to specifications and quality.
  • Proficient with hands-on and automated arc welding and cutting processes.
  • Knowledge of cutting and lancing processes, and basic types of beads, welds, and joints.
  • Knowledge of effects of expansion, contraction, and shrinkage.
  • Proficient mathematical skills for calculations and measurements.
