Culinary Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: The Kitchen Assistant assists the Cook in providing culinary services for the staff and attendees of Family School.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Cook in preparing meals for the attendees by getting out the materials necessary for that day's meals and preparing them as directed by the Cook
  • Assist in maintaining accurate food inventories in order to prepare the proper foods based on anticipated program attendance and the menu planned for each month
  • Assist in rotating stock items (e.g. canned items, non-perishable items) per established program protocols to ensure food items are utilized in the proper sequence; inspect food products regularly for expiration dates
  • Ensure the work environment and stations, including the food prep area and kitchen, are cleaned and sanitized after every meal and at the end of the assigned shift per the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) regulations
  • Adhere to best practices and the careful preparation of food items per ServSafe standards
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, crisis intervention and medication administration using agency-trained protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Child Welfare

CONTACTS: Program participants, Elwyn staff, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), contractors, vendors, county and state representatives

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; ability to read and write English
  • Prior experience working in a kitchen
  • Ability to read and follow standardized recipes and to prepare meals based on a resident's specific diet
  • Strong knowledge of proper food handling procedures; ServSafe certification preferred (must receive and maintain ServSafe certification within ninety (90) days of starting the position)
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Able to work a flexible work schedule including early mornings, nights, and/or weekends
  • Ability to use food preparation equipment, including knives and other sharp objects in the preparation of meals
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
  • Must be able to perform CPR, first aid and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
  • Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated basic experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and has experience utilizing food vendor databases (e.g. for food ordering, invoicing)
