Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Coastal Engineer or Coastal Scientist and Manager with 15+ years of experience to join our Norfolk, VA office. As the successful hire, you will work closely with the local Virginia based team as well as with the broader Moffatt & Nichol team via our highly successful interoffice staff utilization program. This will provide you with an opportunity to enhance your skills, knowledge, and network beyond the local states.

You will manage multiple projects and self-perform engineering analysis and design as well as interface with clients and external agencies for projects in coastal areas. You will lead projects for clients such as the United States Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, cities, municipalities and private clients/developers. We are actively performing coastal engineering services for nearby cities such as: Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Nags Head, and our Virginia area team is also supporting projects along the US East and Gulf Coasts. Project types include design of beach nourishment and dune restoration; dredging; coastal basis of design for waterfront projects such as floodwalls, piers, and other waterfront infrastructure; dredging; wetland creation and restoration; living shorelines, living breakwaters and similar nature-based features; breakwaters, revetments and similar structures; flood walls and deployable flood mitigation features; coastal floodplain management and coastal resiliency studies; as well as associated data collection, analysis and 2D and 3D numerical modeling of hydrodynamics, waves and sediment transport, site plans and regulatory permitting.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Directs, manages, and designs multiple construction projects by studying project concept, architectural drawings, and models
  • Directs, manages, and prepares multiple engineering design by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics and coastal processes, and related topographical and geologic data
  • Directs the analysis of multiple project costs by calculating labor, material, and related costs
  • Creates multiple feasibility studies by analyzing engineering design, conducting environmental impact studies, and assembling data
  • Directs the development of multiple construction specifications, plans, and schedules to produce engineering documents
  • Researches and assists in complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions
  • Successfully supports ongoing Coastal / Water practice initiatives through contacts and business development efforts working with EPA, United States Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, local and state environmental agencies, as well as private sector clients
  • Implements scientific and regulatory tasks for projects to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies, including NEPA, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Coastal Engineering, Coastal Geology or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 15+ years of related experience
  • If the applicant is an Engineer, Professional Engineer licensure in Virginia or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire is required
  • GIS proficiency a strong plus
  • Position requires 3 to 4 days per week in Norfolk unless travelling to job sites within the USA
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Work is generally performed in an office or client office setting. Ability to use standard office equipment is required. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Light travel may be required.
