Job Description

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC), the Managing Executive Director of Development (MEDOD), Neuro and Vision Sciences Programs is responsible for the development of the overall strategic design and implementation of a robust and comprehensive fundraising program to include the following clinical, education and research areas within the School of Medicine: Neurology, Neurological Surgery, Vision Sciences, Psychiatry and the MIND Institute. The MEDOD is also responsible for managing a fundraising team and directs the identification, solicitation and stewardship of prospects/donors; mentoring and developing colleagues in the successful achievement of fundraising metrics; and the development of fundraising materials, marketing plans, and development events/programs.

The MEDOD also carries a portfolio of major and principal gift donors and prospects. This is a metric-driven position functioning as a UC Davis major gifts officer, operating in full compliance with development polices and collaborating with other development professionals throughout the university. Responsible for identifying new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, fundraising plans, and organizing campus-wide site visits and related programs/events. Cultivate, steward, and solicit donor prospects as well as orchestrates solicitations with senior campus officials.

The MEDOD will manage a fundraising staff comprised of four fundraising professionals and two related administrative support staff:


Senior Director of Development 3.0 FTE

Assistant Director of Development 1.0 FTE

Analyst 1.0 FTE

Administrative Assistant: 1.0 FTE

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in comprehensive development and fundraising programs involving a major gifts prospect portfolio management as a front-line fundraiser, including knowledge of proven cultivation/solicitation techniques for gifts at all dollar levels with identified success in major gift fundraising. Successful experience soliciting $1 million+ gifts. Experience in the fields of health sciences, and academic health system, and/or higher education preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulation, policies, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of leadership/management skills concepts, procedures, techniques and best practices. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage colleagues.
  • Excellent leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff. Experience recruiting, training, evaluating, motivating, and coaching employees of various backgrounds and identities. Documented experience building a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion amongst team members.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including excellent political acumen skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Excellent skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, persuasion/negotiation, conflict resolution, and marketing skills.
  • Experience with staffing and mentoring organizational leadership and/or advisory boards and interest groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage budgets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of UC Davis Health, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure and current issues of concern, and knowledge of issues of concern for higher education in general.
  • Experience supervising frontline fundraising professionals in a higher education, health system, college or university, setting.
  • 7+ years of fundraising experience with a focus on major gifts preferred. Capital campaign experience and experience working with grateful patients preferred.
  • Experience with effectively structuring and working with advisory boards and interest groups desired.
  • Exhibit knowledge of organizational effectiveness, health and safety, and commitment to diversity.

Department Description

In 2017, UC Davis embarked on a $2 billion capital campaign which is on track to be completed in 2024. UC Davis Health is a critical pillar in this campaign, responsible for raising a quarter of this goal.
