Minimum Qualifications
The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in 20th- and/or 21st-century African-American Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor.

A PhD in English, African American Studies, Africana Studies, or a closely related field is required by the start of the appointment.
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
Desirable secondary areas include but are not limited to Folklore, Environmental Studies, Ethnic American Literature, and World Literature.

We also welcome applications from candidates who use interdisciplinary and/or transnational methodologies, including candidates who can work in another language in addition to English.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of English houses over 450 majors, employs 43 tenured and tenure-track faculty and approximately 50 non-tenure track faculty. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education and a Bachelor of Arts with concentrations in Literary Studies, Film Studies, Creative Writing, as well as Technical and Professional Writing. The department also offers a Master of Arts in English with concentrations in Literary Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, and Teaching Literature and Writing. We are firmly committed to faculty governance, teaching excellence, active scholarship, and university and community service.

The department seeks candidates who bring attributes that complement the department, program, and college's existing strengths. We are interested in faculty members who have cultivated skills to communicate with, teach, and support others who do and do not share aspects of their own identity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will maintain an active research program and teach a 3/3 load across a range of modalities, including sophomore African-American Literature surveys, upper-division courses in African American Literature for majors, and specialized graduate seminars.

Faculty are expected to produce at least 2 peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) every 3 years, and participate in committee work and related service activities.

ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
