Assistant Professor, Quantitative Ecology / Ecosystem Modeling

Job Summary
The Water School encourages nominations for and applications from qualified individuals with research and teaching interests in quantitative ecology, qualitative ecological assessment, ecosystem modeling, natural systems assessment, and similar quantitative and qualitative methods. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and will have the opportunity to develop new courses, build a productive program of research that involves students, participate on university committees, and perform other duties as assigned. They will conduct scholarship that applies quantitative and/or qualitative methods to address pressing conservation or freshwater aquatic system protection issues regionally in Southwest Florida and nationally and/or internationally, such as modeling of ecosystems or natural systems; analysis of 'big data' to identify trends and assess potential mitigation measures; analyze land use changes to assess habitat loss and other threats to ecosystems; develop novel analytic, modeling, or assessment techniques as applied to real-world systems; and assess other threats to natural systems.
They will be expected to collaborate with faculty members within The Water School and will have the opportunity to work with natural resource managers and decision-makers, community stakeholders, and restoration practitioners to advance recommendations for conservation policy and initiatives including restoration.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research program, disseminating their findings to the region and the academic community as appropriate, and to acquire external support for their research.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Develop and teach assigned courses: prepare syllabi and instruction materials, coordinate lectures, evaluate students and maintain highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
- Develop and maintain an independent and productive research program that also involves students.
- Mentor students, as appropriate, in research.
- Actively work with local communities, as appropriate, to engage them in issues related to conservation ecology.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
- ABD considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2024. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract pending conferral of doctoral degree.
- Demonstrated experience or potential interest in teaching across the undergraduate and graduate curriculum of programs in The Water School.
- Evidence of scholarly expertise related to quantitative ecology, ecosystem modeling, or related quantitative assessment with a potential for research publications in scholarly journals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching, research, and scholarly interests that align with the programs and mission of The Water School.
- Teaching experience as instructor of record and post-doctoral experience.
- Interdisciplinary teaching and research perspective with well-established research agenda and productivity in quantitative ecology, quantitative assessment of watersheds or other environmental systems, ecosystem modeling, or related field.
- Field experience in population ecology of animals; measurement and acquisition of data on environmental systems use of databases on environmental systems for analysis; or similar.
- Indigenous approaches to natural resource conservation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the use of various and innovative teaching approaches to engage students and ensure student learning.
- Demonstrated development and use of skills appropriate to the discipline.
- Ability to conduct independent research and involve undergraduate and graduate students in research; ability to mentor student research with their learning and training in mind.
- Ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary team with various colleagues and stakeholders.
