 POSITION SUMMARY

 

Under the direction of the Manager of Tissue Services, the Specialist Birth Tissue Program will collaborate on the development and implementation of this program with hospital partners.  The Specialist Birth Tissue Program also assists with all tasks related to the successful coordination and completion of the birth tissue acquisition process which includes, but is not limited to, initiating contact with expectant mothers and providing education and guidance on the donor process, obtaining informed consent, determining donor eligibility based on approved guidelines, and ensuring the sterile collection/handling of tissue.  

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Work with hospital staff to on the development and implementation of the birth tissue program with contracted hospital partners.

·         Obtains informed consent for donation of birth tissue post-delivery.

·         Acquires donated birth tissues for transplant and research following Versiti Organ and Tissue procedures and protocols.

·         Oversees and coordinates birth tissue case activity.

·         Evaluate expectant mother eligibility to donate by investigating the expectant mother’s medical and social background through a review of questionnaires and medical records.

·         Ensures accurate and thorough completion of donor chart documentation.

·         Follows aseptic technique and OR protocol for the acquisition and labeling of donated tissue.

·         Transports or coordinates transport of acquired tissue, blood samples and/or cultures to assigned destinations.

·         Assists with birth tissue supply management.

·         Provide education, information and consultation to hospital staff as needed to ensure that all aspects of the birth tissue donation process are understood, supported, practiced and implemented.

·         Establishes and maintains effective relationships by providing a high level of customer service through timely communication, presence and visibility

·         Seeks to identify and implement improvements to the birth tissue donation process.

·         Provides training and feedback to Versiti Organ and Tissue staff for the purposes of birth tissue donation.

·         Submits routine development plans, including issues, goals, and strategies, and monthly activity report to the Manager of Tissue Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

·         High school education or equivalent required.

·         Associate or bachelor degree in a health care field preferred

 

Experience

·         Minimum of one year in healthcare or related field. 

·         OB Tech / Surgical Tech Certificate preferred.

 

Skills and Knowledge

·         Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office and the internet for data entry and retrieval of information.

·         Strong attention to detail and ensures accuracy in completing paperwork.

·         Ability to organize and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task in challenging and stressful situations, and utilizing conflict resolution skills to provide a productive work flow.

·         Knowledge of basic medical terminology, medications, disease processes and human anatomy.

·         Excellent interpersonal communication and rapport-building skills including the ability to listen actively and respond with empathy, tact, and sensitivity.

·         Ability to apply judgment and fact finding to solve problems.

·         Takes a positive approach to working within a team and is flexible with others.

Tools and Technology

·         General office equipment (computer, printer, fax, copy machine).

·         Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
