The Evergreen State College is accepting applications for Day and/or Swing shift Custodian 1 positions on a continuous basis. Applications on file at the time a position becomes available will be forwarded to the search committee for consideration.

These are over-time eligible positions working on the Day or Swing shift in Building Services on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. The applicant pool established from this posting may be used to fill full-time, part-time, temporary, and permanent positions.
Position Purpose
Perform custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and care of the institution facilities.
Nature and Scope
This position reports to the Custodian 4 and under direct supervision, carries out various cleaning duties wherever assigned.
Essential Functions
  • Vacuum furniture and carpets.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect restrooms.
  • Dust mop and wet mop tile, brick, and vinyl floors
  • Clean offices, classrooms, hallways, and lobbies.
  • Sweep interior and exterior steps under all covered areas and entries.
  • Clean loading docks and balconies.
  • Auto-scrub hallways, lobbies, classrooms and all other open areas required.
  • Strip and/or scrub, seal, wax and buff tile, brick, and vinyl floors.
  • Maintain S.M.A.R.T. collection stations in assigned areas.
  • Clean locker rooms and swimming pool areas as assigned.
  • Clean custodial tools and equipment and return to storage areas when finished.
  • Keep custodial rooms clean, organized and properly stocked.
  • Set up and take down chairs, tables, staging and other necessary items for special events and functions as required.
  • Assist in supporting Graduation and other institutional events as they occur.
  • Clean windows and mirrors.
  • Wash walls as needed in rest rooms, collection areas, classrooms, and other areas of obvious dirt or graffiti.
  • Pick up designated trash collection in all buildings and keep collection containers clean and odorless.
  • Perform custodial area duties and comply with Custodial Services policies and expectations as well as those of The Evergreen State College.
  • Assist Building Services Manager and shift supervisors as needed.
  • Shampoo and spot clean carpets and furniture.
  • Move furniture and office equipment when required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Ability and willingness to work various work shifts.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and carry them out correctly.

Physical Work Environment
  • Duties common to custodial work require physical strength, agility, and endurance to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, bend/reach, lift equipment, pull/push objects weighing up to 75 pounds, climb ladders and operate heavy machinery.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals, dust and other environmental conditions is expected in custodial work.

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Employees must comply with college policies related to masking and vaccination requirements, as well as Governor Inslee's Proclamation 21-14.1, which requires employees of the college to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received a medical or religious exemption prior to first day of work.
  • May require a valid Washington State driver's license.
