Day in the Life

HMH is currently searching for a skilled, multi-talented, and nimble UI Designer to join a cross-disciplinary Design team. We’re looking for someone who will shape the creative of our immediate digital asset needs and elevate design as we usher in the next generation of educational software. We strive to maintain a positive atmosphere that is design forward, open, considerate, respectful, and above all passionate. This is largely a tactical role, working on a variety of products that will need to be refreshed for the 2020 school year and beyond. Many of these products will need to be integrated with a larger education platform while still maintaining integrity as a stand-alone product. This means creating a cross-platform visual look that speaks to multiple audiences: students, teachers and administrators. Form factors include but are not limited to multiple desktop and tablet resolutions.

You will report to the Design Director and work closely with Design Managers, UI and UX Designers, and stakeholders to drive toward an optimal design solution and hands-on deliver the UI artifacts for multiple products throughout their lifecycles. This is an excellent opportunity to consult and brainstorm with stakeholders, product managers, and UI/UX designers to capture requirements and determine creative direction. In this role you will rapidly produce multiple concepts and prototypes, understand when deeper exploration is warranted and when it is best to change paths and try another approach, translate wireframes and other UX documentation into high fidelity prototypes, deliver pixel-perfect designs that are as usable as they are beautiful, and work closely with team leadership to advance the practice of good design and customer success within the company

  • A thorough understanding of the atomic design methodology
  • Experience with responsive web and app design
  • Experience effectively organizing documentation and other design artifacts
  • Desire and ability to stay on trend with current designs and innovations to build optimal and engaging products
  • Ability to juggle multiple products/projects and manage workloads and deadlines swiftly
  • Communicate effectively to other teams to champion the design vision
  • Ability to accept direction and critique as a natural part of improving your work and skillset

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery
  • Experience with After Effects, InVision, Principle, Axure, 3D programs, game engines

Physical Requirements

  • Will be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., and operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
