Overview

Senior Research Technician in the Select Agent laboratory for the Institute of Antiviral Research (IAR).  Ensures completion of both in vivo and in vitro antiviral studies as well as the continued operation of the Select Agent (SA) laboratories. 

Responsibilities

A senior research technician within the SA laboratory reports to IAR Principal Investigators and helps manage work, as well as full- and part-time employees with regards to work conducted in the SA laboratory.

    Assists and manages personnel and the day-to-day operations within the SA laboratory.
  • Assist with the management of animal technicians to ensure adequate labor is available to complete in vivo and in vitro antiviral studies.
  • Assists with the design, execution, interpretation, and publication of research experiments.
  • Completes lab animal experiments according to written protocols, including viral infections and treatments of laboratory rodents with antiviral drugs and vaccines.
  • Assists with the completion of in vitro antiviral studies, including infection of cell culture plates, evaluation of cell viability, and generation of virus stocks.
  • Performs plaque assays and plaque reduction neutralization testing.
  • Performs RNA isolation from virally infected cells or tissues and RT-PCR.
  • Performs ELISAs to evaluate host immunological responses.
  • Evaluates and summarizes data for the Principal Investigators.
  • Maintains accurate records and logbooks within the SA laboratory.
  • Complies with all safety and security regulations within the SA laboratory.
  • Works with CDC/USDA inspectors to ensure compliance for SA lab inspections.
  • Researches and recommends parts and supplies for the maintenance of the SA laboratories used by the IAR.
  • Performs or supervises routine and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment, ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies; performs periodic safety checks of equipment.
  • Investigates emerging technologies and makes recommendations for implementation.
  • Performs general lab maintenance such as cleaning and restocking of lab supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3 years of laboratory research experience or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, organization, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory animal research while working in biosafety containment level BSL3 or above.
  • Previous experience working with viruses

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Ability to lead, manage, and work with other technicians.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and to identify and solve problems.
  • Skilled in examining adjusting operations and procedures, formulating policy, and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and revise safety policies.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures, especially within the SA laboratory.
  • Ability to evaluate the cost of supplies and determine cost-effective measures.
  • Ability to perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
