Job Description Summary:

The Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at the George Washington University seeks a highly qualified Senior Research Associate, Data Governance to serve as a data governance specialist for a three-year term (with a possible extension if funding allows) to help establish a behavioral health workforce database that will aggregate provider-level data from a variety of sources. The Mullan Institute is a university-wide initiative to strengthen health workforce policies in the United States and around the world. The Mullan Institute is in the Department of Health Policy and Management and its members represent the Milken Institute School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Business, Graduate School of Education & Human Development, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy & Public Administration.

This experienced researcher specializing in data governance carries out research/development activities by using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, analyze and report data activities. Using a wide degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position are to make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results, with limited guidance from the Principal Investigator. This position compiles results and prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes. This role is familiar with a variety of field concepts, practices, and procedures, and can perform a variety of research tasks. This position typically reports to a project supervisor or project manager, and may provide guide to lower level staff.

The Senior Research Associate, Data Governance will be part of a team focused on health workforce research, including emerging issues, health equity, education, and training. The following are examples of typical duties:

  • Developing the data infrastructure and process for storing longitudinal provider-specific behavioral health workforce data
  • Inspecting, cleaning, understanding, and transforming data
  • Evaluating datasets for consistency, completeness, accuracy and reasonableness
  • Auditing data on a regular basis and ensuring data integrity
  • Identifying and correcting data entry errors
  • Creating a database for storing data dictionaries and troubleshooting problems
  • Creating data governance strategies and deploying recommendations and roadmaps
  • Training staff in best practices in data quality, data management, and data definitions
  • Ensuring that policies and processes are carried out
  • Identifying potential areas where existing policies, processes, and standards require change or where new ones need to be developed to ensure data governance objectives are met
  • Supporting project management activities by reporting on project status, risks, and issues

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree in a related discipline and 3 years of direct experience in the field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

  • Master's degree in Information Technology or Business Administration
  • Minimum 3 years of computer systems analysis, consulting, and IT management experience
  • Experience in developing and implementing data governance policies, processes and standards
  • Experience managing metadata in a repository or supporting a data management program
  • A IT management approach that exhibits strategic thinking, collaboration, and direct communication
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills
