Head of Engineering, Search Data Platform

Job Description
The Amazon Search team is looking for a Big Data technical leader for our Search Data Platform Engineering team.
Every day our customers worldwide discover products and services to buy by searching through billions of available items at Amazon.com.
Search Data Platform Engineering team designs, builds, and operates distributed infrastructure and platform to process the petabytes of data that flow through Amazon Search and make it available to all appropriate internal teams. This platform powers research, training of machine-learned models, delivery of ranking data to our production systems, and generation of business insight into Amazon's retail business. Our data also powers live-site features, including search suggestions, query understanding, spelling, search result ranking, and personalization.
In this role, you will:
* Establish a culture fueled with customer-obsessed innovation and engineering excellence.
* Work directly with the senior management team, data science leaders, and worldwide internal customer teams to guide strategic investments in the data platform for search.
* Build systems that can support the scale of Amazon with agility to support the growth of Amazon across new categories (e.g., video, groceries), business models (e.g., subscription boxes), countries, and user experiences. These systems process billions of events per day, support hundreds of internal teams, and have petabytes of data.
* Build a strategy and a roadmap of deliverables balancing short & long-term needs
* Be a thought leader in big data processing frameworks at Amazon and influence overall roadmap for the whole company
* Engage closely with the team and provide technical leadership, strategic direction, and oversight to ensure timely delivery with high quality.
* Mentor the professional development of each direct report through personal and performance management.
* Attract, excite, grow and retain top engineering talent
* Make build- vs-buy decisions for the software needed for your domain
* Build a strong relationship with your customers, peers, and stakeholdersBasic Qualifications
* BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
* 10+ years of experience in Software Development. 5+ years of management experience. 2+ years of experience in managing managers.
* Proven experience in delivering effective big data systems at petabyte scale
* Expert-level knowledge of Big data processing frameworks such as Kafka, Spark, Hadoop,
* Experience in shipping multiple software products through all stages of the software development life cycle
* Ability to discover the real requirements underlying feature requests, recommend alternative technical and business approaches, and lead engineering efforts to meet aggressive timelines with optimal solutions
* Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrated experience engaging and influencing senior executives and managing stakeholders
