Bring your ASCP Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) license and passion for blood banking to support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross Blood Services.
We are looking for a full time Medical Technologist (Stem Cell) to work Tuesday-Saturday 1pm-9:30pm at our NORFOLK, VA Immunohematology Reference Lab (IRL) performing specialized testing to serve our local hospital clients.
Medical Technologist (Stem Cell) staff can expect to perform basic and advanced donor and patient tests, and interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility. Job duties/expectations will also include:
* Resolving compatibility problems
* Providing complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services
* Performing automated and manual test procedures on blood samples
* Performing advanced manufacturing and processing procedures, as applicable
* Performing HPC, Apheresis processing, maintain records within the HPC laboratory
* Must be able to work independently and demonstrate independent problem solving skills
* Demonstrate good written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
* Adhering to explicit standard operating procedures and interpret test results in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements
Other Medical Technologist (Stem Cell) responsibilities include:
* Consult and communicate with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve serologic problems and provide special units to transfusion recipients
* Manage receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples. Assist in daily workflow of patient and donor work. Documents supply and equipment problems.
* Manage reagent inventory including ordering, receiving, inspecting and preparing reagents
* Perform and interpret basic and complex donor and/or patient testing procedures and complete required quality control, as appropriate to state and federal regulations. Recognize testing irregularities, identify the cause, determine the solution and resolve the problem. Assist Technologist I and II in problem resolution.
* Consult and communicate with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve complex serologic problems and provide special units to transfusion recipients.
* Receives and processes HPC, Apheresis products for cryopreservation
* Labels HPC, Apheresis products and ensures proper storage location and conditions,
* Performs cell count calculations and completes recordkeeping related to HPC, Apheresis processing. Perform, review and approve quality control on products, reagents and equipment.
* Inspects and prepares HPC, Apheresis products for distribution. Consults and communicates with the staff of hospitals and transplant facilities as needed throughout the HPC, Apheresis manufacturing processes as needed.
* Perform labeling and verification of blood products.
* Perform maintenance, repair and validation of laboratory equipment and software maintenance.
* Perform duties associated with document development and management.
* May perform manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.
* Adhere to procedures and good manufacturing practices (GMP).
* Assume lead responsibilities such as record review and training. Assist in concern management.
* Perform staff orientation and competency assessments, if applicable. Perform external customer education.
* Perform other related duties as necessary.

Position scope:
Works closely with laboratory staff; blood services medical staff, blood services management staff, regional hospital blood bank technical and medical staff, and Red Cross regions in USA (medical and technical staff). Provide training and guidance to new technologist and technicians. Act in lead capacity in the areas of record review and training. May involve variable locations and some travel. On call responsibilities, as applicable.
Qualifications include:
* Technologist II: MT/MLS/CLS (ASCP) or BB (ASCP) with 3 years blood bank experience OR MLT/CLT (ASCP) with 5 years blood bank experience.
* Technologist III: MT/MLS/CLS (ASCP) or BB (ASCP) with 4 years IRL experience OR Bachelor's degree with major in Biological Science or Chemistry plus 8 years blood banking experience.
* Schedule: Must be available for daytime training during first 6-9 months on the job. After training, schedule is on Second Shift Tuesday-Saturday (1pm-9:30pm) with low on-call/holiday rotation.
* Physical requirements: Available to work overtime, other shifts, early mornings, evenings, holidays and weekends. Requires standing, stretching, stooping and bending for extended time periods. Lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 50 pounds. May work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time. Work under pressure and within time standards. Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. when there is exposure to blood and blood products and/or where work location requires.
