RN School Nurse Ward 2 (DC Public Schools) (20000045)

DC's children need you! We are seeking public health oriented Registered Nurses with a determination and commitment to improving the lives of children in the DC public school system. The school nursing team provides comprehensive school health nursing services to school-age children in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention while also safeguarding their integrity and recognizing their right to make their own decisions.

As part of a public-private partnership with the District of Columbia's Department of Health (DOH), Children's School Services (through Children's National Hospital oversight) provides on-site nursing services in 120 DC public schools and 70 public charter schools.

The population of the District of Columbia is approximately 600,000 residents, approximately 20% of whom are children.

Our nurses are responsible for:

* Immunizations

* Ongoing expansion of clinical knowledge base

* Rotating between assigned schools as needed/required

* Organizing nursing activities for the day including vision and hearing

screening, clinical assessment of health conditions, and referrals

* Appraising and addressing the needs of the general student

population, students with chronic and acute health problems and

special education students with unique needs

* Performing a variety of selective individual health assessment and

initiate the referrals on identified health needs and perform subsequent

follow-up

Qualifications

Minimum Education
A.A.
BSN

Graduated from an approved school of nursing. (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
At least one year of LPN or RN experience

Program Management

2. Conduct school health needs assessment to identify current health problems and identify the need for new programs.
3. Develop and implement needed health programs using a program planning process.
4. Orient, provide training, document competency, and oversee the practice of Health Technicians, and Nursing Assistants, as appropriate to the school setting.
5. Participate in environmental safety and health activities, e.g., indoor air quality, injury surveillance, and prevention.
6. Adopts and utilizes available technology, as appropriate to the work setting.

Health Education
1. Assist students, families, the school staff and community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and
2. delivered health promotion.
3. Participate in the assessment of needs for health counseling and health instruction needs for the school community.
4. Provide formal health instruction based on sound learning theory, as appropriate to student development levels.
5. Provide individual and group health teaching and counseling for and with students.
6. Act as a resource person to school staff on health promotion activities and materials.
7. Further the application of health promotion principles within all areas of school life, e.g., food service, custodial, etc.

Education
1. Acquire and maintain current knowledge and competency in school nursing practice.
2. Acquire knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty practice of school nursing on a regular and ongoing basis.
