Job Description

The Loss Prevention Specialist is responsible for receiving, investigating and recommending settlement of fraud claims involving
members, including, but not limited to use of credit cards, ATM transactions, cash and check transactions
and loan accounts by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be
assigned. The Credit Union reserves the right to modify, amend or eliminate the described functions,
tasks and responsibilities of this position at any time when the circumstances warrant such a variation.
* Receives information from Credit Union departments, other financial institutions and law
enforcement agencies regarding suspected fraud cases.
* Conducts interviews to gather information relating to fraud investigations of losses or potential
losses.
* Contacts Members by phone.
* Compile detailed reports on fraud cases and collaborates with law enforcement.
* Prepare written reports.
* May represent the Credit Union at legal proceedings regarding suspected fraud cases. Testify in
civil or criminal proceedings.
* Implement or monitor processes to reduce financial losses. Recommend new or improved
processes to reduce risk exposure.
* Maintain documentation or reports on incidents.
* Recommends accounts to expense as losses
* Receives, processes and answers applicable fraud related subpoenas.
* Completes regulatory reporting requirements in accordance with NCUA Rules and Regulations,
preparing criminal referral forms when necessary.
* Assists and supports branch offices when potential fraud or loss situations occur.
* Prepare and review regular fraud loss reports.
* May be able to assist with bond claims.
* Attends meetings, seminars, etc. to expand expertise and maintain professional contacts. Organize
in-house seminars as well.
* Review film footage for suspected fraud.
* Assists in training of staff regarding fraud and loss prevention. Communication with staff on the
telephone on potential fraud.
* Prepares correspondence with members, law enforcement agencies, etc. regarding fraud cases.
* Continues professional development through professional organizations, educational courses,
books and professional journal publications.
* Counsels members on proper use of Credit Union products and services.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); past experience in fraud or loss
prevention and/or training in all phases of fraud activity, including, but not limited to skip tracing;
general knowledge and understanding of applicable laws and regulations including, but not limited
to state penal code, Michigan Collection Practices, Reg CC Federal Reserve Regulations, Check
Processing and Reg E; demonstrated knowledge of investigative procedures; knowledge of Credit
Union products and services, including policies and procedures; or equivalent combination of
education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical
procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers,
employees, law enforcement agencies, members, and the general public.


REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in
written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to use PC; excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to
perform job responsibilities accurately, efficiently and in a professional manner; ability to
maintain appropriate confidentiality in matters pertaining to the personal affairs, including Credit
Union account information, of members, ability to perform applicable financial and account
maintenance transactions accurately; ability to exercise sound judgement in making decisions and
recommendations; ability to accept and carry out new duties; ability to relate to
members/customers and co-workers; demonstrate initiative and self-motivation and ability to
prioritize duties. A positive attitude and dependability are required. Must have excellent oral and
written skills.
