Position Summary:

Our Exhibits Programs serve as a key community and donor engagement vehicle and support the research and instructional missions of UCI by interpreting and publicizing the richness, diversity, and unique strengths of the Libraries' resources and collections. In doing so, they also help foster an environment that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and connection with our broader community.
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives and with direction from department librarians, accessions and processes (i.e. arranges, organizes, describes, and preserves) born-digital archives and prepares digital assets and web archives for public use. As part of a team, implements archival collection management workflows, policies, and procedures related to digital archives. Oversees maintenance of digital staging and storage areas; ingests digital records into digital asset management systems and digital publication platforms.. Participates in the department's digital projects, including: working collaboratively on a project team; serving as a metadata contributor; applying knowledge of descriptive content standards and utilizing spreadsheets for ingest workflows; and editing, correcting, and performing quality control on digital assets throughout their life cycle. Works scheduled shifts at the Special Collections reference desk, providing assistance to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and other members of the local and research communities. Serves as a supervisor and work leader for student assistants performing archival processing tasks.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $27.82 - $30.46 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $27.82 - $38.04 (Hourly Rate).

Required:

  • At least 3 years of experience working in an archives or special collections library environment.
  • At least 6 months of experience organizing and describing archival records, special collections materials, and/or historical records.
  • Experience conducting research on people, organizations, and topics, and summarizing this information for multiple audiences.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in using software, hardware, and other tools for digital archives and/or digital projects including born-digital legacy media formats, web archiving, and/or digital asset management.
  • Experience processing archival materials and preparing finding aids according to contemporary archival standards endorsed by the Society of American Archivists.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective public service assistance in a research library using judgment and discretion in negotiating complex questions, interpreting and implementing policies and procedures, and dealing with a diverse population of patrons.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to oversee student employees and interact effectively with a wide variety of co-workers throughout the UC Irvine Libraries.
  • Oral and written English-language communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly and interact effectively with patrons, student employees, colleagues, and donors, and to prepare accurate and effective written materials, including descriptions of collections and policy or procedure documents.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise effective judgment, be flexible, and show initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish a wide variety of simultaneous ongoing tasks.
  • Ability to establish and implement new procedures and to organize and implement special projects.
  • Ability to maintain work schedule and meet deadlines despite interruptions and distractions.
  • Ability to use personal computer word processing software, email, computer printers, and external hardware.
  • Ability to compile statistical reports including use of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to print clearly and legibly.
  • Ability to read and accurately use file and locate Library of Congress Classification call numbers.
  • Basic knowledge of preservation practices for rare and archival materials.
  • Knowledge of standard procedures for safe handling of rare and archival materials.

Preferred:
  • Experience providing reference services in a Special Collections environment.
  • Experience using open-source digital processing tools (i.e. Bulk_Extractor, FITS, and other BitCurator tools).
  • Familiarity with the UC Irvine campus, Orange County, California, and its history.
  • Experience supervising students, including training, overseeing workflow, delegating responsibility, and evaluating performance.
  • Detailed knowledge of departmental collections, policies, and procedures.
Special Conditions Required:
  • A few times a year with advance notice, this position may be asked to work evening or weekend hours for special events.
  • This position works in an alarm-controlled, high-security environment containing rare materials.
