Job Description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and require your dedication and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

We seek an experienced electric motor design engineer to specify, design, and procure electric motors for valves, pumps, blowers, and fans for our Lunar Lander for NASA's Artemis mission. Your work will play a significant role in the complete life cycle of space transportation, from requirements definition, analysis, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, verification, integration, and operation on the moon. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of space exploration.

You will lead the specification, procurement, and/or design for Lunar electric motors, gearboxes, and actuators used in ECLSS, ATCS, and F&P subsystems.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of electrical motors for valves, pumps, fans, and blowers on a lunar lander, ensuring compliance with rigorous space and lunar environmental requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate motor systems into the lunar lander's propulsion, life support, environmental control, and thermal control systems, ensuring seamless functionality and reliability
  • Conduct detailed electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analysis to ensure optimal motor performance in the unique conditions of lunar mission
  • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in motor design for space applications
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in electrical motor technology, materials, and space-rated components, and implement best practices to enhance motor design for lunar applications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • 15+ years of experience in motor design utilizing software such as Motor-CAD, Maxwell, MotorSolve, or SPEED
  • A proven track record of designing and developing electric motors for various applications, such as automotive, industrial, aerospace, or medical
  • Familiarity with different motor types and topologies, such as induction motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors, and stepper motors
  • Proficiency in simulation and design software tools for electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analysis, such as ANSYS Motor-CAD and Maxwell, COMSOL, Simcenter MotorSolve, SPEED, Altair FluxMotor, and MATLAB/Simulink including, but not limited to:
    • Calculation of magnetic circuits and flux paths to achieve the desired performance characteristics
    • Determination of the number of poles, slots, and winding configurations based on the application requirements
    • Optimization of the air gap, magnetic materials, and core geometry to maximize magnetic flux density and minimize losses
    • Evaluation of temperature distribution within the motor to prevent overheating and ensure thermal stability
    • Determination of cooling methods, such as natural convection, forced convection, or liquid cooling, depending on the application
    • Structural analysis to ensure mechanical integrity and durability, considering factors such as vibration, centrifugal forces, and rotor dynamics
    • Selection of materials for rotors, stators, and bearings to withstand mechanical and environmental stresses
    • Design of the motor windings to achieve the desired electromagnetic properties and minimize losses
    • Selection of ins, ulation materials and systems to ensure electrical performance, reliability, and safety
    • Improvement of motor efficiency through advanced design techniques, such as fractional-slot winding, skewed slots, and field weakening
    • Optimization of motor performance characteristics, including torque-speed curves, power factor, and power density
  • Experience with manufacturing processes, such as winding, lamination stacking, and mechanical assembly, to ensure manufacturability and cost-effectiveness
  • Quality control measures to validate motor performance and reliability during production and assembly
  • Proficiency with motor efficiency improvement through advanced design techniques, such as fractional-slot winding, skewed slots, and field weakening
  • Proficiency with motor performance characteristics optimization, including torque-speed curves, power factor, and power density
  • Awareness of industry standards and regulations, such as IEC, NEMA, UL, or specific application standards for safety, performance, and environmental considerations
  • Knowledge of motor control systems, including sensor feedback, closed-loop position, speed, and torque control, and field-oriented control (FOC)
  • Understanding of motor drive power electronics and inverter design
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of engineers and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills, including presenting complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications
