The individual selected for this position will be responsible for educational programming and related agricultural issues for field crops. This includes corn, soybeans, cotton and grains, including new and emerging crops; assisting landowners/producers with alternative income opportunities and implementing pesticide education/certification programs. The agent in this position must have technical competence in field crops and in the delivery of formal and non-formal education programs, and participate in field trials and research opportunities on local farms.

In addition, this individual will be expected to aggressively maintain interactive programs with highly technical producers, agribusinesses, and groups traditionally involved with Extension programming in Stanly and Anson counties.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Other Work/Responsibilities
The person hired for this position will be responsible for providing leadership in in planning, implementing, evaluating, and marketing educational programs and activities with measurable impacts in the areas of field crop production. Programs will address current and future agricultural production, natural resource issues, challenges including alternative farm enterprises, and business management.

The person selected for this position will be responsible for educational programming and technical assistance related to all phases of field crop production.

The person selected for this position will also be able to conduct on-farm research with producers in Anson and Stanly County.

Develop and maintain organized Agriculture programs that follow North Carolina Cooperative Extension policies, and guidelines.
  • Determine clientele needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the agriculture program and services on a regular basis.
  • Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies and community organizations to meet the needs of the agricultural community.
  • Network with neighboring Agents, University Specialist, and local Ag Producers to plan and implement innovative research test plots, and educational field days. Promote agriculture in the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education
One of the following educational requirements: - A Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. - A Bachelor's degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master's degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or - Completion of a Master's degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent's job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Department Required Skills
A Bachelor's degree crop science, agronomy or an area related to the agent's assigned responsibilities is required.
